From the Facebook page of the Santa Fe Railway Historical and Modeling Society, as posted by Tyler McMillin:

Quote:
A sad end to the 117 year old depot in Parker AZ! It's demolished by the Arizona and California Railroad for a track expansion project. It was the last remaining depot between Cadiz and Matthie. (The Aguila depot remains in Scottsdale.)

This is the image that Mr. McMillin refers to. This image may or may not load properly.

Two things stand out about it. One is that the station appears to have been in good condition.

The other is there appears to be a large wrecking crane on a spur beyond it, and it looks like it might be in Arizona & California colors.

The A&C does indeed have a derrick; it's fully operable at last report (call it "ran when parked" in March 2022) and is allegedly promised to a preservation project when enough stars align.

While it can be very tricky pointing fingers when it comes to business decisions... this one seems like a real shame.

I feel like businesses and organizations need to realize that preserving history has business advantages including employee morale, city / state organizations looking favorably on funding, etc.

Was there any attempt to save it? Or the announcement came too quick to make anything happen.

My irritation is why one of the 'architectural disassembly' people wasn't called in to salvage the lumber or other components by removing them piece-by-piece> We did this to one of the more attractive (but very poorly located) buildings in Springhill, LA in the early Nineties, and while it was a 'damn shame' it was also true that a great deal of old-fashioned-dimension lumber was available for restoration use. This station is now no more than straight demolition and landfill expense...

When I was doing a project there the building was more than just preserved, it was fully functional as the center of the railroad in Parker.

Heck, you can still see the AC units, insulated windows, etc.

Just remember, this is no longer ACR, this is now a G&W property, and G&W can have some pretty interesting property policies out there. I had to do a deal on a station in my area to save it, and it was 'confrontational', but keyed on liability exposure - a solvable problem.

If you want the property for something else, and there's a 'value of time' issue (i.e. we need it now') and that's what this is looking like....

But it's still painful to see. That was a well maintained and classic structure.

That really looks like a 'hurry up and crush it' job, can't believe they didn't at least take off the AC units. And the shot of the other side showed some heat pumps....
