I'm not so sure this was once a Steamtown engine. I remember reading that George Hart at one point owned six six-coupled steam locomotives, almost in pairs; BEDT 0-6-0T 14 and RDG 0-6-0T 1251; CPR G-5 4-6-2s 1238 and 1286, and 2 CPR 4-6-0s, 972 and another one. Could this be the second 4-6-0?

Hello

Yes, its definitly an ex Steamtown USA engine, a near twin of 972 formerly owned by Hart. I've got pictures of the '98 covered with snow in the Riverside Vt Yard somewhere...

Here's to hoping the 972 finds greener pastures once the Rail Tours situation shakes out...

OK, I guess I remembered it wrong, approximate pairs of engines. Whatever I read was years ago-

I remember talking to *someone* at Steamtown, VT in the '60's right after it arrived down the Conn River Line about how soon they would "activate" it for service.....He said that the tires were bolted on and would not pass ICC at the time. Notice the photo, check the drivers.....Would this condition really make a difference in putting it in service now? I'd LOVE to hear and see a D-10 work again.......

 Post subject: BEDT roster
PostPosted: Fri Aug 06, 2004 6:52 pm

I was thinking today that it would be nice to see a BEDT roster and dispositions. I see Kurt has filled in the blanks about 13 and 14, I know Thomas is a BEDT engine (I don't remember which one) and there is one on Long Island. I started volunteering at BR&W the year after 14 came out of service and missed seeing it run, although I heard all the war stories about it's steaming and riding qualities, and how the bearings weren't up to 5 ten-mile round trips per day.

Are any other BEDT steamers left? And is there a BEDT roster, both steam and diesel, anywhere on-line? Interesting little railroad, running steam in the shadow of the UN building.

It is my understanding that GE 44-ton #10 is actually owned by the Stewartstown Railroad. This is the engine that became stranded in York, PA, in 1972 because Tropical Storm Agnes tore through the area the day before it was to be delivered to the Stewartstown RR (by a Penn Central freight on the Northern Central line). It took more than 12 years for the engine to arrive at its destination! -- Ray

For the survivors, go to steamlocomotive.info, click on search, go down to railroad name and type in "brooklyn eastern district terminal." The wording needs to be exact in order to bring up links to the five survivors.

For rosters and some historical info, follow the link.

The one on Long Island is the #16, which was the last to operate on the BEDT I understand. The Delaware & Ulster in Arkville also has a BEDT engine, and there is also one in Florida. Quite a few of these engines have survived. The #16 is owned and kept at the Railroad Museum of Long Island's site in Riverhead, New York. The BEDT #16 is slowly being restored by Mike Arnold who is another RYPN interchange reader/poster. I understand the museum isn't doing anything with it, so I think its his personal project. He's been busy with other things and running the 16" gauge mini train, so he hasn't had time to do much with it just yet. If he completes the restoration, it will be a good example for fellow younger-generation railroaders.

Riverhead is located between the two forks of Eastern Long Island. The town of Riverhead is going through an "urban renewal" and attractions such as the Railroad Museum, the Atlantis Marine World aquarium and amusements, the Splish Splash waterpark, a planned amusement park, and new shopping areas are really helping to revive a classic old town. It is still far from what the town officials are trying to do with it, though.

The museum is located right in town, and the town itself is on the Peconic River. You can take your boat from anywhere (Long Island Sound via Orient Point, Atlantic Ocean via Shinnecock Bay, you name it) and pull it right into town behind the stores on the riverfront.

The museum has big plans which are starting to materialize. This year, the 1964 World's Fair miniature train (a Sturtevant/MT&RC 16" gauge F-unit, highly rebuilt and modified by Grumman) went into operation on a layout of track on the museum grounds. An eventual engine house/restoration shop are planned. A turntable has been brought down from the Arcade & Attica for eventual installation and use with the #39 excursions. The #39 of course is one of two surviving LIRR steam locomotives still on Long Island, which has a grant for a professional contracted-out restoration. In coming years, plans are to use it in excursion service between Riverhead and Greenport on the last leg of the former LIRR mainline which is seldom used these days. Due to the fact the engine is not designed to run at speed in reverse, turntables at each end are neccessary. The Greenport turntable, the original, is still there and can be used after work.

There is an 0-4-0T Porter, stored serviceable, in a shed on the site which is mounted on a trailer where it can be steamed up. It's kept in the shed and you can't see much of it, but I've linked a picture when it wasn't in the shed. It came from the Defiance Coal Company in New Mexico and is a most unusual 40" gauge. It was owned by Stan Groman at Rail City in Oswego, and was donated by a man in Southampton who restored it to operation.

Aside from these three steamers at the RMLI, there is also an RS3 ex-LIRR, the first prototype (and sole surviving) LIRR "double decker" (trailer model, not powered MU" which were a landmark to Long Island commuters into the 1970s. There's also three of the 1998-retired LIRR Pullmans which will be used behind the 39 when restored. Visit their web site for the much more equipment they have. Don't forget they do have a second site in Greenport's old freight depot, home to the "Jaws" snowplow, the Greenport turntable, etc. Don't forget the wooden caboose! Go up, pay them a visit. It's about an hour and a half, given a good day, from the city. You can also take the Long Island Railroad from Penn Station as the stations in Greenport and Riverhead are adjacent to both museum sites. Frank Field in Greenport also has a 16" gauge miniature railroad with three miniature MT&RC F-units, and any covered wagon fans should go there and check it out. One is painted for the New Haven (an AB), another for the Lackawanna.

Are you sure the dates this locomotive was leased to the Lykens Valley are correct? I was working for Mercersburg Railway in 1979 and 80. The Lykens Valley was a sister railroad and the first operated by the parent company, Northmont Industries. Originally the LKVY was operated with Alco S-2 number 1 which was moved to Mercersburg when that railroad started. A 44 tonner was moved to Millersburg to replace number 1 in 79 or 80. I recall taking batteries to Millersburg and doing some prep work to get this GE started. I believe this was ex WM 76.

Eventually the LKVY became the property of a fellow named Don Moryer. I think it was he who brought in the 10 to replace 76. This would probably have been in 81 or possibly 82 if I recall correctly.

I am certainly no expert on these little GE's and it has been so long ago I am not sure of any of the above details except my trips to work on one or more 44 tonners. I think I may have actually worked on both. However I am sure the Lykens Valley did not exist in 1972. That should have been the year Hurricane Agnes closed the line due to flooding. Is it possible the 10 was actually leased in 1982 and the 1972 is a typo or am I completely wrong about all of this?

Not to mention the Empire State Building...if you look just above the fuel bunker!

Although it is lettered for the Stewartstown, I think technically speaking the unit is owned by George M. Hart, who is also is President and General Manager--that was my understanding from speaking with him in past conversations, anyway.
