I noticed the campaign train being used by Kerry out of St. Louis. Several times the press has said that the rear end car was used by Truman during his 1948 whistle stop tour. I was under the impression that he used the Ferdinand Magellan. Did he use another car or is the press reporting inaccurate? Or did the Ferdinand Magellan sneak out of Florida from the Gold Coast Museum?

The video I saw had the Georgia RR 300 in the background. It is based in Jacksonville, so it is possible the FM came north with it. I'd like to find out which cars are in the consist if anyone knows.

The Magellan is still in Miami awaiting some finish up restoration work. The car is only used by seated or past Presidents not candidates.
Jack Heard's Georgia 300 was used by Bill Clinton in the past.

Here are some of the cars that I was told would be on the train:
Georgia 300
M-K-T 403
Silver Quail
Four Amfleet II coaches
One Amfleet I cafe car

I understand the some of the St. Louis Car Company "green train" cars will be in the consist also. The train is supposed to be fifteen cars long. Maybe someone along the line can record and post the actual consist, that is if they are not arrested for publishing national secrets!

OK this is where the Harry Truman stuff came from. The owner of the MKT 403 thinks Harry Truman used his car once. The only photos the owner can produce are photos of President Truman on the Ferdinand Magellan.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch today said the train was 18 cars long. We saw it blast past the Museum of Transportation at about 3:20 PM yesterday, but we didn't get a count. I did see the "Silver Quail" at the front, four or five Amfleet cars, the Rail Cruise America or green train cars, with dome, followed by several heavyweights with the Georgia car at the rear. A pilot train passed by us at about 11:00 AM, and nothing else moved until the Kerry train, so the UP was handling it like a POTUS or presidential special. I understand that in the Truman election campaign of 1948 the Ferdinand Magellan was not always used. Among the several other cars he used might be the MKT car that was mentioned. Does anyone have this info?

I had always heard that Truman also used Business Car #11 former McDonald's currently Sugarcreek and owned by OC Founder Jerry Jacobson. As I've posted before if it was and if it was used on the GT runs, he now has both the locomotive (6325) and car used by Truman in Michigan on the GTW.

Quite a coincidence huh? Sorry, GTW was a Canadian RR, quite a coincidence EH!?

Ron, MOT's interpreters say HST rode in your Missouri River Eagle obs. car when he was a Senator.

Perhaps Sen. or VP Truman also rode in the Katy car since MKT was a Missouri road.

President Truman used the drawing room in our MP obs car #750 from the original MP "Eagle" on many occasions, usually as a guest of the MP. The car was built in 1940 so he would have been in the Senate as well as VP, and later he used it after leaving the White House. When he became President I would expect the railroad would have made an office car available to him if the Magellan wasn't being used on a trip. The MP served Truman's home town of Indepencence, Missouri, and was the logical route he would take to Washington, DC and back, usually using the B&O from St. Louis to DC. If someone has the book on Presidential travel by train by Withers, if I remember right, we might get a better picture of the 48 campaign and what cars were used on what lines. BTW, I rechecked the newspaper this evening and the length of the Kerry train was 15 cars, not 18. Sorry for the memory lapse.

Ron,
Checked "The President Travels by Train". Pages
197 to 227 details the 1948 campaign. The only car used from Sept. 5, 1948 till Oct. 31, 1948
for the President was Ferdinand Magellan along with 16 other support cars. The election was
November 1st.
Good reading if you have the time.
You think we have problems covering the cost of excursion trips. This 1948 trip almost died halfway thru for lack of money to pay Rock Island
who refused to move the train for unpaid rail fare.

Hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like the locomotive has a decal on it -or one of those advertising wraps.

Has anyone tried this as a temporary solution to painting a locomotive as a "stand-in."
