At Nevada Northern we have one free-standing water spout (water crane?)left from steam days. It was built by Fairbanks Morse and is a Sheffield Car Co. 1899 design, sn 4605. Does anyone have info on this? There is a special hydraulically-piloted valve down in the ground but the set-up is confusing. Some day in our spare time we hope to get our Baldwin VO-1000 running. The only written material we have is for the Baldwin S-12. What is out there as far as maintenance and operation manuals? How many VO's exist with the original engine? Hi Jack, I have some books on the BLH 600 series, RS12 and DRS 100 if it will do you any good. I am not sure what on these is akin to the VO. dave irondave@bellsouth.net |

Contact Al Breigel or Brian Murray at SMS in Bridgeport, NJ. They specialize in restoring Baldwin diesel locos (they have almost two dozen units in operating short line freight service) and have a VO-1000 on their roster. Tell them Uncle Kurt sent you. K.R. The Baldwin VO 1000 may be the primary reason Baldwin failed in the diesel business.... The VO series engine is troublesome at best. The later 600 series really are quite good. Most VO engines received a very complicated series of factory upgrades in an attempt to solve the problems. This sometimes makes it difficult to work on them as each one may or may not have received all the various upgrades. The Indiana Transportation Museum here in Indianapolis (Noblesville) has an ex Navy VO from Crane, IN that they have had running in the past, but has since been placed back into "display" status.
