Post subject: Watch for Taber's indispensible "Index to RR Period
PostPosted: Mon Mar 06, 2000 3:43 pm

For those of you who do serious research in railroad industry trade periodicals, such as American Railway Journal, Railway Age, Railroad Gazette, Locomotive & Railway Engineering, et al., Thomas T. Taber III of Muncy, Pa. is currently putting the finishing touches on his 800-page grand index of RR periodicals. Five years in the making, Taber will have a tie-together index and a list of where one can find holdings of periodicals around the country. Believe it or not, he has thoroughly indexed every one of the non-railfan serials, mostly by railroad name and thereunder by subject, giving year, date and volume pagination where applicable. The index, I believe, is for all serials ca. 1830-1960. And for you traction guys, he's indexed all the traction serials too, as well as the Car and Locomotive Cyclopedias in their many editions. I have seen draft copies and it is simply incredible. It is planned for a February 2001 release date. Taber has also published his four-volume "Guide to Railroad Historical Resources" (1993) which is a highly useful union list of where to find virtually every significant railroad archival and library collection in the U.S.A. No serious railroad researcher should be without it. God bless brother Taber!<br>
