Post subject: EMD model 40 diesel
PostPosted: Sat Mar 18, 2000 12:23 am

The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum of North Judson, Indiana has finally received its donated EMD model 40 industrial 4 wheel diesel switcher. Only 11 of these were built. Calument Steel of Chicago Heights, Illinois donated this little gem to the museum. Eventual plans call for the engine to be restored and eventually placed in operation. The museum knows of one other existing model 40 (at Travel Town in L.A.) and would like to know if any others exist (either in museums or on industrial lines or "derelict". The major problem with the newly arrived engine is a badly worn set of wheels (nothing left to turn) which must be addressed before it could be placed in operation.

When photos are developed, pictures of the locomotive will be available on the museums website (direct link through RYPN.) In the meantime, the engine is available for photographs on the museum grounds.
Hagerstown's is being prepped even as we speak for a move to the Walkersville Southern, where it's expected to become the new primary power for our excursion train.
Another Model 40, "Old Bill," formerly used in the AMF arsenal in York (now the Harley Davidson plant) is displayed at the York Historical Museum. It was run there under its own power, I believe.
I think there is one at the quarry at the end of the West Shore Industrial Track off the Selkirk Branch at CP-RJ (Rotterdam Junction) NY.
