Post subject: | Louisiana Forney |
From the Critterslist, a person describes a visit to the remains of two Forney locomotives (former NYC Elevated, I think) in the swamps of Louisiana: Hi Everyone: The fact that I say almost nothing on this list does not mean that I cannot recognize a critter when I find one . . . My wife and I took a bayou boat tour in Napoleonville, Louisiana-- about three and a half hours long, very nice small pontoon boat, lunch included ($35/person, I think--my wife paid!!!!) and we did indeed see large alligators, Bald Eagles, and on and on, and midway during the tour the naturalist mentioned a "railroad locomotive in the woods" and I explained that this was Extremely Important and so they took the boat up a bayou. The company is called Attakapas Adventures, phone # 985.369.7254, website is www.attakapasadventures.com and email is AttakapasAdventures@Yahoo.com. Okay, so . . . The three-person crew nosed the boat up the bayou and there in the woods is the remains of a railroad yard and what I think is a Forney on its side (stripped) and another Forney boiler about a hundred yards away. If you look closely you can see that there was some kind of yard there, where maybe the cypress logs went onto the trains or came off trains. I know little of logging railroads, etc. But having ridden Edaville trains since I was a boy (although the equipment is now in Portland, Maine) I pretty much know a Forney when I see one. The company is small, informal, and extremely courteous and professional--offers fishing tours, Cajun restaurant and sunset tours, and so on. And now it most definitely knows that some people out there prize a different sort of critter . . . It is a nice family destination, not far out of New Orleans Pity the Forney is stripped, but it was fun. I thought of all of you. John Stilgoe OSK #201 |

The one laying on it's side is Napoleon Cypress Co, ex-Manhattan El, 0-4-4T Class E #156(329). The construction details are Baldwin 6488/1882. Dicken Gibbens took the following two photographs; they and other details can be found on my Steam Along the Mississippi Delta webpage: -James Hefner Hebrews 10:20a Surviving World Steam Project |
