Post subject: PRR K4...

K4 1361 is under complet (and I do mean complete) overhaul at Steamtown NHS, in Scranton PA. The engine had some MAJOR problems, but theres nothing a little (or a lot of) green can't fix, and apparentlythe Railroader's Museum (in Altoona, they own 1361) has enough green to pay for it. Just for example: Volunteers at Steamtown had constructed an entirely new backhead, and teh entire smoke box is going to be scrapped and a new one fabricated. Sections of the mud ring were milled from solid pieces of steel, and various other, equally major parts are being severly reconstructed if not entirely replaced with new parts. Projection for completion was originally may of 1999, but the team has discovered problem after problem as they've gone, and the completion date is pushed back at least until early 2000. If you live near Scranton, and would like to volunteer (weekends are when the help is needed most) contact:
Steamtown National Historic Site
150 South Washington Avenue
Scranton, PA 18503
