A booster is a separate geared steam engine usually found on the trailing truck of the locomotive. However, some where located on the leading truck of the tender. The booster engine itself was two cylinders attached to a crank shaft that was geared to the truck wheel set. The booster motor was activated by a device attached to the power reverse lever. This allowed the booster motor to be run only when the power reverse was in full gear,(In the corner) The motor itself had an overspeed device so the locomotive couldn't destroy the booster by running (dragging) it too fast. Generally the booster was used up to around 10-12 MPH. The idea of a booster was to supply some extra tractive effort to start a heavy train.<br>
