Post subject: SP Water Towers?

Last weekened I drove on mostly on California Hwy 99 from LA to Sacramento. About ten miles north of Bakersfield, and also in Fresno(?), I saw water towers, perched on top of truss like support columns. There is no doubt they were water towers and on the UP (SP) right-of-way, but does anybody know if they were used for steam, or were they just regular water supply type towers?
Thanks

There are more than a few Southern Pacific water towers left, probably more so in California than elsewhere on the system. Right off hand, I can recall one in San Jose.
There are water towers in West Texas along the former SP. Valentine and Ft. Hancock,Tx., come to mind. Alamogordo, N.M., supposedly was going to save its water tower after the depot was demolished.
