Conrail also took over as directed operator of the Ann Arbor Railroad. The state of Michigan purchased the AA's assets from the Detroit Toledo & Ironton to keep the railroad operational, as the USRA (created by Congress to determine the shape of ConRail) recommended the abandonment of all operations north of Ann Arbor, MI. Conrail operated the line until October 1, 1977 when the contract was transferred to the Michigan Interstate Railway. While the AA was under Conrail operation, some AA locomotives did venture to other conrail points, despite the fact that they were owned by Michigan.

The Following is a link to a letter from the President of Conrail to all would-be Conrail Employees. Note the railroads listed -- far more than the six usually associated with the formation of Conrail.

This is relevant to us as preservationists because this page, from www.dnaco.net/~gelwood , is an example of how to electronically preserve and share important historic documents so that they can be readily accessed and used by historians, which can result in a growing interest to learn about and preserve railroad history in all forms.

Back then there was an 11.55PM Trenton Local that ran with MP54 MU cars. We left Suburban that night with a Penn Central crew, and detrained at Holmesburg Jct. with a ConRail crew working on behalf of SEPTA.
