After a major winter time overhaul including wheel replacement to comply with new FRA regulations, Fort Collins Municipal Railway Birney car #21 will start running for the public on Saturday, May 1st. The overhaul on the car was completed on Sunday April 25th and a shakedown run was made at 4:PM. This will be the 15th season of operation of car #21 since the completion of it's restoration and return to service in 1984. Birney car #21 is the only original restored streetcar running on an original route in the US.
Roger Mitchell
Master Mechanic
Fort Collins Municipal Railway
Two ingredients are required for trolley lines to come under authority of the Federal Railroad Administration: A. Standard Gauge and B. Public grade crossings. If either or both factors are missing, you are exempt. Unfortunatly, the Fort Collins Municipal Railway has both and we recieve annual inspections for the last 8 years by the FRA. So far, we have cooperated with them and they haven't proved to be much of a problem. They have never found a problem with either our track or rolling stock.
Roger Mitchell
Master Mechanic
FCMRy
