Post subject: Golden State find

On a recent trip to New Mexico I drove U.S. Hwy 54 to see how many SP lower-quadrant semaphores were left. While I spotted at least a dozen, I was particularly drawn to a pair south of Duran, N.M., that were solar powered. The real find though was an exposed section of pipe sticking out of the ground parallel to the RR. What was interesting about this pipe was that it was made of sections of wood bound together by iron rings, something akin to a wooden barrel, only straighter pieces of wood. I believe this to be piping for the EPSW/SP water main.
Anyone speculate otherwise?
