Builders photo. Strasburg's 3750 was given this number for a time after retirement.

The original 1737 sat at Northumberland, PA. back in the late 1950's as did most of the collection of PRR. locomotives which are now at Strasburg.

1737 was is such bad shape, a desision was made to subsitute the 3750 for the 1737. She carried that number till she made it to Strasburg, when it was decieded to reinstate her original number.

I wonder if what constituted "bad shape" in the '50s or '60s would have been considered worth saving later on? Wait... I think I know the answer to that.

I've seen photos of both 1737 and 3750 before and after the number swap at Northumberland. 1737 looked very rough around the edges, and was allegedly well-worn all-around, whereas the 3750, although also somewhat well-used, was in far superior cosmetic shape. The major difference was the slotted wooden pilot on the 1737 as opposed to the cast-shield drop-coupler pilot found on 3750.

In the light of locomotives with torched cylinder castings being restored to main-line operation in Britain, there's little if anything that would have kept the original 1737, had it survived in someone's barn or industrial siding, from being restored to service, albeit we'd have to see the results of the boiler ultrasound, etc. before making a final decision. I mean, if 1361 was worth all that--UH OH, THE MODERATORS ARE AFTER ME FOR STARTING ANOTHER FLAME WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <:-o
