CP Alco and caboose on display at Farnham, Quebec. Looks like the vandals are no kinder to displayed diesels than they were to steam a couple of generations ago:

Sold for scrap!.... The CP Rail MLW M-636 that was on static display in Farnham for several years will be cut up for scrap this Spring. The caboose has already been sold and gone. The locomotive is constantly being vandalized and the city does not want to invest in refurbishing it.

The locomotive has seen better days: http://www.railpictures.net/photo/245123/

Not knowing what's under the hood, I'd say it's a shame it wasn't parted out first. Oh well, another one gone...

As of January 2017 the loco (minus caboose) is still there, right outside the offices of what is now the Central Maine & Quebec:

A post on Trainorders from yesterday gives this bit of unverified info:

"The city of Farnham has announced that M636 CP 4723 has been sold to a scrapper (for
$1000) and will be cut up on site shortly." (link)

Below is a photo of the loco in 1996 when the locomotive display was new. Note the
absence of a fence. Is it safe to say that cities are not up to the task of long term care
of park locomotives? Yes, everyone here knows that's true. But that's where rail
preservationists step in and take over. That didn't happen this time, I guess.

Side info: The Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) was a subsidiary of ALCO. I am
guessing the M636 is identical, or nearly so, to the C636. Wikipedia has this to say:

Quote:
The ALCO Century 636 was the most powerful single-engine diesel-electric locomotive
constructed by American Locomotive Company (ALCO). It used the ALCO 251 prime
mover. The locomotive had a C-C wheel arrangement and 3,600 horsepower (2,700 kW).
The locomotive rested on a pair of trucks of all-new design, known as the Hi-Ad, standing
for 'high adhesion'.

Very sad, not only as a lost ALCO design, but the small community couldn't retain a unique aspect of its railroad heritage. This kind of loss must send a sharp pointed jab at the CPR for donating the locomotive in the first place.

As I stated somewhere in a earlier post... It is a shame that we cannot have nice looking railway items representing our Railway History regardless of Country! To this I would like to thank All Vandals and Taggers= Graffiti Artist !!
