The above link will take to a discussion of NN #40 and weather it has cracked axles. Further more there has been some band aid repairs to the lead truck on 40 since I was there.

When the 81 was ordered it was ordered to be a smaller locomotive that the 95 already on the property. The 93 is slightly more powerful than the 81. The stoker was put on because it was the regular road power and the feeling was the run (round trip 280 miles) was a lot to ask of the fireman. When you look at the coaling tower in Ely the wood section was added latter to accommodate stoker coal.
