If you're interested in railway infrastructure like roundhouses and bridges (as well as locomotives), check out the digital collections at the Library of Congress, American Memory web site. The HABS/HAER records (Historic American Building Survey/Historic American Engineering Record; about 36,000 recorded sites)are gradually being digitized and put on-line. The searchable records include drawings, B&W photos with captions, written data pages and color transparencies. There are at least 20 documented roundhouses. Many records are still being digitized but others offer a staggering amount of info. The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy RR roundhouse in Aurora IL, for example, has 131 B&W photos and 119 data pages. Truly amazing. Altogether, there are 50 searchable collections of miscellaneous photos, postcards and maps (RR maps!) at the site. Be warned: you can spend hours there.
