From Kevin Frick 1/24/09

We were able to replace rthe grates in the 0-6-0 on Saturday. Stephen harrison, Randy Ridgley, Bob Stevens and I worked on this project. We also had some track work done by Randy, Bob And Stephen over the past few weeks, they have removed ties that were marked, hand dug the mud from beneathe them, placed new stone in the excavation and replaced the tie with the number on the rail. We will very soon be needing the demonstration from the manufacturer of the pnuematic equipment Giles talked about. I hope to get the hose removed from the skid steer the next time I am at the property. randy has to drain the fuel from the fuel tank so it can be removed to acces the damaged hose. end of report.

Also, preparations were made to do some roof work on the Southern RPO 71 car:

Recently the new fire box grates were re-installed in our Porter 0-6-0 after being machined by a local technical center. Currently this is the only operating steam engine in the state of Virginia.

There will be a work day tomorrow (2/21) at Hallsboro Yard

The focus of tomorrow will be the repair of the engine on the HM-6 (The Clifton Forge Hump Car)

We will be pulling the flywheel off to replace a leaking freeze plug. Then the engine will be put back together and the car will be fully operational. after that will be the cosmetic restoration.

It's been awhile since I've posted anything, I've got to be better about these things....

The Spring Excursions were sold out as well as our fall trips and the upcoming Santa trips.

The renovation the Southern Passenger Station into our museum has begun with completion expected in the spring, photos on our web site: http://www.odcnrhs.org

There has been a lot of work done on restoration out the Hallsboro Yard with two notable projects, the N&W 1202 RPO car
http://www.odcnrhs.org/1202.htm

and the start of the restoration of the Southern Pullman Sleeper, the "McGirth"
http://www.odcnrhs.org/McGirth.htm

There's also a lot more pictures on the chapter's web site not only of the equipment, but also the station

There will be a work session at Hallsboro Yard on Saturday November 21st. All the new ties are in place and we will be using the new pneumatic spiker to get switchs one and two back into operation. Any help would be appreciated and any newcomers welcome.

Track crew worked this past weekend at Hallsboro Yard using the new hydraulic spiker. Huge increase in productivity. Switch 1 is now repaired with new ties and spikes

We just spiked down two sections last week. Previously we used a spike maul which cost me one shoulder which required surgery. This time we used an IR 90# jack hammer. So much easier!

Later!

We had some major damage from the snowstorm. The roof over the Dinwiddie County, the wooden RF&P caboose and the HM-6 collapsed. Thankfully, it looks like the cars sustained minimal damage.
