| Post subject: | New boiler construction...how many places? |
Folks, just doing some research for a new film project. How many (railroad) shops in the US (besides Strasburg and Boothbay) hold the necessary stamps and certifications to build all-new locomotive boilers? Obviously there are companies that build boilers out there, I am interested in knowing which tourist/railroad museum related shops in the US can do it...Henry Ford...TVRM? Thanks, Stephen |

I do believe you mentioned the only two "S" stamp holding shops. There are a number that do there own work but do not hold an "R" stamp...when one is under the FRA and posses a good welder you can do your own firebox work and, as one railroad has prooved, even repairs to the shell IF a welder is qualified on the necessary procedure. The henry ford does NOT do any boiler work(outside of washes) themselves. I forget if it is a state or city of Dearborn requirment but all work must be done by an "R" stamp shop. This raises another question for me. How many railroads out there posses an "R" stamp? |

While over the border into the Great White North, Boilersmith in Seaforth, Ontario, built a new boiler for the White Mountain Central's Climax, along with a few 2' lokies here in California. A person I know who's dealt with them was very pleased with their work. Both of these outfits, however, are insular so I can't speak for FRA compliance. |

Texas State Railroad had three new boilers built but I do not know from where. |

These guys are good, they built ours, the welding is phenomenal. We sent them the old boiler, they sent us a new one. Once we fitted all the exterior components, the boiler was stress relieved, then they finished it. Every stud and hole on the old boiler lined up with the new one. http://www.boilersmith.com/facilities.html |

Warren, The new boiler on Southern Railway 401 in Monticello is outstanding. It is of all welded construction and has the same style lines as it's original. I believe they told me it came from St. Louis for about 350,000 dolars. JD Johnson, Morehead and North Fork Railroad Historian |

Boschan Boiler and Restorations Inc. in Carson, CA holds an S stamp and an R stamp. Paul is currently abuilding on a new boiler for the Disneyland Railroad locomotive no. 3 the "Fred Gurley". He has also recently completed several boilers for 2' gauge locomotives that will (eventually) be operating under FRA regulation. http://www.boschanboiler.com/index.html Chris Allan |
