How many NW5s still exist, either in service or preserved?
I know that the Florida Gulf Coast RR Museum has one of the ex-Fort Street Union Depot NW5s (#2). I also seem to recall that one of the GN NW5s is on static display somewhere in the Northern Plains, or the Pacific Northwest, though I can't remember where.
Others, anyone?
-fm
Webmaster, Pere Marquette Historical Society Web site, at http://www.rust.net/~milhaupt/pmhs/

Methinks there is one preserved in its original paint scheme at Whitefish, Montana, though I can’t remember its number.
Kevin
Yes there is a GN NW-5 on static display in Whitefish, MT. The Lake Superior Railroad Museum's North Shore Scenic Railroad recently completed the restoration of it's GN NW-5 No. 192. The paint job was done by the E&LS but most of the preparation and mechanical work was done by the museum. The unit looks great in fresh GN livery and will be powering tourist trains up the North Shore for the remainder of the season.
Jeff Terry
I have seen a photo of a GN NW-3 on display at Whitefish, MT. I saw it on the web, but can't for the life of me remember the URL. Is this the engine you're thinking of, or is there also an NW-5 there? Another site also has a photo of an NW-5 in Burlington Northern colors dated 1995. Does anyone know if BN still has any in storage?
The Mass Central RR has an NW-5 from the Southern Railway. Right now it's down for repairs in Barre Plains, MA. Last I heard they do plan to get her running again.
