Gee Jeff, IRM has THREE GP-7's? Sounds as if perhaps a trade for the 4160 might be in order!

B&M GP9 1732 is at RMNE. Built May 1957, as part of B&M's "trade-in" of their FT fleet for 50 GP9s. It was acquired in 1997 from a leasing company that took title to it from Guilford Rail (where it was #68). 1732 got a blue B&M "dip job" in 1998 and ran until Dec. 2001, when she broke the crankshaft and was parked. A replacement 16-567C is now on hand and was recently moved into Thomaston Shop for refurbishing. Plans are to have the engine work completed over the coming winter, and to have work commence on 1732 next season. It needs some metal work and a decent paint job.

What did the IRM diesel crew have to do to the CNW GP7's engine to un-stick it? Lots of Kroil and leaning on the barring jack? Please share.....lots of EMD-savvy talent out there in Union.

Thanks for the info. Wow Jeff, you IRM-EMD guys are hard core. I always suspected that when I saw them all walking around with EMD test cock wrenches on their keyrings! (during my one visit to Union in 1993---ARM convention).

Ex SP GP-9 there as well.
Ex CNW GP-7 at Mobile locmotive in Chicago Heights getting rebuilt for Badger Minning
Just a few that come to mind quick.

That was the general plan for unsticking her, Howard.
They pulled the rocker shafts, valve bridges, and injectors, Kroiled all the cylinders, and after a suitable soaking time, slowly worked her back and forth with a pair of barring jacks. When "hard spots" were found, the engine was left at that position, and the cylinders believed to be the problem were kroiled yet again. This process was repeated several times until she could be barred over with the jack for several complete revolutions.

The engine was then spun over electrically: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fohreFTnXEM, and after reassembling the top deck (injectors, rockers, etc), and a rough attempt at timing the injectors (hard to get exact when she was still kinda stiff )she was brought outside, and despite only having compression on about 14 cylinders, several attempts were made to fire her up,.......

...after hooking her up, via jumper cables, to 1 running FM H10-44, and a big blue Baldwin, she finally fired up :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on-2y7eeLfc&NR=1 , barfed nasty oily carbon chunks all over the area, and promptly produced a waterfall out of the firemans side of her front radiators....a header was cracked in a hard to see area.

The header was patched late that night, and the next morning she fired up much easier...of course then the voltage regulator decided to imolate itself and the reverse current diode, resulting in a spectacular light show in the cab.

After a parts search through a reefer in yard 5, she was patched together electrically, and had her injectors retimed again, and was much smoother running, although she still didn't wanna move by herself.

I was at home the next weekend, and to my great shock, saw her moving herself around the yards on the webcam...had to call in and congratulate em right then and there!

Over the next week or 2, the remaining 2 cylinders gained compression as the rings unstuck themselves.

5828 came into the Museum under it's own power in 1988, freshly restored by CSX. Nothing has been done to it since. 521 looks good cosmetically, but was a "parts engine" before it's donation to the Museum in the early 90's.

Former Union Pacific / Great Western GP 9 #296 is a the Boulder County Railway Historical Society in Boulder Colorado. Locmotive is complete and potentially operable, has not run since 2000.
