There are also three privately owned former Lehigh Valley two bay hoppers in Temple, PA.

That would be five, I thought there were three all together in that group, two RDG and one LV.

Rob,

There are indeed five two-bays hoppers - The RCT&HS's pair of RDG's and the three LV cars.

Hi,

Are the three LV cars the ones pulled out from next to the Hazelton Shaft breaker about 15 years ago?

The East Broad Top has 6 two-bay hoppers left. 3 are regular, and 3 are flat bottom hopper doors.

This doesn't count the 2 side dumps. They have four bays anyway....two doors on each side.

I *think* the B&O Museum has one in their freight-car stash near the Restoration Facility, an ex-Buffalo & Pittsburgh car that had been converted somewhere in its life into an ice-breaking car for tunnels, with an I-beam frame to smash out icicles before auto carriers found them. I *think* it's a two-bay...........

And there's the Central Vermont car at Valley RR, parked as a display at East Hadaam station. It's a 1912-era car.

OK, so there are more than 25 around. That's good!!

Just as an add-on to the Steamtown cars, here's a photo of the three from around 2005.

Note, each one was restored to a slightly different era, making for three distinctly "different" cars. As an added touch of class the folks at Steamtown added "faux" coal loads to show folks what these cars actually did during their service lives.

Has anyone else displayed their hoppers as loaded equipment?

Three of the hoppers from the Virginia Scrap Iron & Metal yard in Roanoke went to the Virginia Museum of Transportation. The fourth went to a private owner who arranged their removal from the scrapyard.

The Everett Railroad has one two bay car purchased from Sloan Cornell's collection a couple of years ago and held as a relic. Sloan had purchased it from Berwind White Coal Co. and used it while building the Penn View Mountain RR.

We too have one of the tappered top two bay hoppers at our facility. If memory serves me it was originally an EL car. We got it from Roebling several years ago.

It is in very good shape with sides that aren't too beat up considering the service she was in.

Later!

Ed,

Do you have two cars at Pemberton? I had you listed as having a Lehigh Valley hopper from Roebling.

The Northern Pacific Railway Museum recently acquired NP 207412. It was built for the Wilcox Co. as a USRA design hopper in 1922 and was among the first 49 hopper cars purchased by the Northern Pacific in 1930. It was renumbered NP 70025 until its conversion to a sand car for company service in 1957. The museum plans to return it to its original configuration as soon as the appropriate doors and hardware can be located. Currently it doesn't quite fit the criteria for the census, but hopefully it soon will! If anyone is aware of the appropriate hopper doors please contact me.

The EBT has four sloped bay two bay hoppers rather than three. All are in Mount Union

I just recalled that the Indiana Railroad Museum, which operates the French Lick, West Baden & Southern tourist train, had two two-bay hopper cars. Not sure of their heritage, or even if they are still there. Doesn't seem like we get much info posted on RyPN from members down there. Does anyone have any info on those two twin-bay hoppers?

Rob, you're right, it is a Lehigh Valley, not EL.
