Post subject: What happened to Texas articulated cars?
PostPosted: Tue Mar 19, 2002 11:13 am

Hey, Dennis, what happened to the private car collection that had some of the articulated cars? It was somewhere in east Texas, and I can remember a texas highways article about it.

That's Flint Ranch, just south of Tyler, TX. All those cars and cabooses are still there. I believe the articulated ones are "Shasta Daylight" cars, though.

What are the cars parked outside of Tyler, Dennis?

It's been about 6 years since YOU and I were both there as a prelude sidetrip to Texas State RR debuting the No. 300, Hume. Anyway...
Flint Ranch is really Whistle Stop Ranch in Flint, TX. As I recall, a retired Cotton Belt employee there has collected some cabooses, a Southern Ry. or Central of Georgia business car, that articulated SP "Shasta Daylight" lounge-whatever car set, and some wrecked Amtrak cars. I believe the articulated car set came from the Judge Hofheinz passenger car collection in Houston. Anyone have a roster of what the old Judge amassed? I recall seeing part of that huge collection at the Houston SP depot in the early 1970's.

Guys,

The Golden Gate Railroad Museum, here in San Francisco, has an SP articulated coach in their collection. I don't know if it is a Daylight car or not. It was last used in MOW service by Amtrak. So the outside at least looks pretty bad.The interior may be better.

Are any of the remaining articulated cars a three unit set?

Doyles car was totaled on the Algoma, it was a two unit set.

The car at the Whistle Stop ranch is a 3 unit set. The owner I have been told also owned another articulated car set which sat by the old Bordon milk plant in Tyler in the early 70's. He supposedly sold them to Lone Star Steel for an employee park, but I have heard they were scrapped.

There was a 3 unit articulated set on the Sierra years ago, but it was stored there and never used. All the 3 unit sets I know of were Coffee Shop/Diner/Lounge cars used on the Daylights and the Larks. There were no 3 unit coaches I've ever seen. But, I'm no Espee passenger man..

The triple-units were all meal service cars. For the Daylights the units were diner-kitchen-coffee shop. For the overnight trains (Lark and Cascade) the units were dorm/kitchen-diner-lounge.

On the SP coffee shop cars served a more moderate fare and had a higher density seating. I believe that I read that as service when down (and before they took off the triple units) the service levels were also changed to reduce costs.

On the Lark the dormitory area was later removed and replaced with a coffee shop for the coach passengers that had been added to the train.

The unit that was on the Sierra was one of the Cascade cars.

One of the Daylight triple units was reconfigured into a two unit coach. The kitchen unit was removed and the two table units were converted into coaches. A couple of problems were that there were no vestibules and maybe no restrooms. As such the car could only be used along with other cars. But it had a capacity of 68 per unit!

If I've got any of this wrong it is because I haven't gone to the source books, but am only working from memory.

The Golden Gate Railroad Museum has an articulated coach built in 1941 for the Coast Daylight, and a 1949 triple-unit diner from the Cascade. They also list a 1939 combine (#3302) that I would guess is also an original Daylight car. Another coach (#293, nee #2386) was built in 1954 for the Coast Daylight. I believe this coach was mentioned earlier in this thread. The SP kept this car in their business fleet into the 90s.

Updating another old thread.

Last year over on Railroad Picture Archives I found a photo taken by Michael Palmieri at NOUPT of Amtak's Crescent and the World's Fair Daylight: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1931904. The photographer lists the consist of the Daylight in the caption:

Michael Palmieri wrote:
Across the platform on track 6 is the WORLD'S FAIR DAYLIGHT, which would depart for Oregon the next morning. The DAYLIGHT had GS-4 4-8-4 4449, water car PNWC 4219, combine PNWC 3300 MILN D. GILESPIE, sleeper-lounge PNWC 600 MT. SP to Amtrak Numbering Discrepancies:

*Different sources give different roster details for the 1949 Shasta Daylight coaches that Amtrak purchased in 1973 and numbered in the #75xx-series. For reference, Plan #7571 coaches had the vestibule at the non-restroom end, Plan #7571A coaches had the vestibule at the restroom end, and Plan #7570 coaches had 38 seats and a crew locker.

"Amtrak by the Numbers" gives this listing:
SP #2382 (#7571) to Amtrak #7503. Retired 3/1976.
SP #2383 (#7571) to Amtrak #7504. Retired 11/1977.
SP #2384 (#7571A) to Amtrak #7505. Retired 11/1977.
SP #2385 (#7570) to Amtrak #7506. Retired 1976.
SP #2387 (#7571) to Amtrak #7507. Retired 11/1977. SW #507 "Shasta"
SP #2389 (#7571A) to Amtrak #7508. Retired 5/1975.
SP #2392 (#7571) to Amtrak #7509. Retired 11/1977.
SP #2395 (#7571A) to Amtrak #7510. Retired 1976. SW #510 "Tuolumne"
SP #2397 (#7571A) to Amtrak #7511. Retired 11/1977. PAR #2397 "Shasta Springs"

Another source gives this listing:
SP #2382 to Amtrak #7503.
SP #2383 to Amtrak #7504.
No listing for Amtrak #7505.
SP #2384 to Amtrak #7506.
SP #2385 to Amtrak #7507. SW #507 "Shasta"
SP #2387 to Amtrak #7508.
SP #2389 to Amtrak #7509.
SP #2392 to Amtrak #7510. SW #510 "Tuolumne"
SP #2395 to Amtrak #7511. SW #511 "Stanislaus"??
SP #2397 to Amtrak #7512. PAR #2397 "Shasta Springs"

Can anyone clarify the discrepancy? Note: "Amtrak by the Numbers" lists SP coach #2401 "Golden Flake" as being Amtrak #7512.

Is this the Cascade set #10280-#10281-#10282 that is now part of the GGRX collection?
