Here's a photo album about a neglected Nickel Plate Road 0-6-0:

It's number is 384. It currently is located in Wellington, Ohio, and is crying out for cosmetic restoration.

Blog dedicated to restoration and operation updates of we volunteers out at the McKinney Avenue Transit Authority in Dallas.

http://m-a-t-a-volunteers.tumblr.com/

Our current work projects run the gauntlet from Interurban restoration for use as a dining car on our line, to restoration of original Dallas Turtleback cars for service. Not much now on there, but expect updates currently on a weekend basis.

Just as a heads up to anyone who has been using Google Reader to follow blogs to actually learn about rail preservation news.
Google Reader will be dead on July 1 2013.
According to Wikipedia, you have potentially other options with Feedly and Digg, but I cannot vouch for those programs. If Feedly is anything like Grouply, I would say stay away from it.

I just wanted to give a heads up in case you had any favorite blog links you wanted to bookmark on your own.

Now that the fire has been dropped at Google Reader once and for all, has anyone put together a successor reader site for the one Tomgears had assembled a few years back?

Thanks

I haven't found one, and while the Google News Feed was useful in its early days, it became too cluttered and full of bogus items that weren't really related to the subject to be of much use.

The best resources I've found are forums like this one, where real people post stories of interest, and you don't have to wade through all the junk to find them. Very rarely do I find a significant story related to preservation that isn't covered here.

As we move to start the year 2017, it appears that there have been quite a few blogs that have gone dormant for the use of other, more generic perhaps more accessible social media. This was captured in a post a few years ago on the blog for Project 4468 in Australia:
Quote:
Project 4468 is on the move to FACEBOOK
Due to various time constraints and competing life priorities for the admins of this blog, the project restoration page is moving to Facebook.
By having the facebook page, we will be able to update much more easily from mobile technology and save the hassle and inconvenience that arises from having to program the layout and photo resizing hassles that come with using this interface.
Also, by utilising Facebook everyone can contribute to the project restoration.
Cheers,
Project 4468 Restoration Team

Even though this can be clearly stated as the common trend, I am also happy to report that the effort to document all sorts of angles of the rail-history/preservation landscape, with detailed and well-thought out semi-regular web presentations, is ALIVE AND WELL, if just in a few web addresses.

As my gift to RYPN readers this year, I am providing a recent compilation of active blogs that you should be able to subscribe and keep abreast of the work of the posters.

And I have been using the Cheetah News blog reader with good success, only subscribing with my email address and a password.

I recently discovered "The Old Reader" which is a convenient way to collect and review blogs. The free version has a capacity for tracking 100 blogs. This led me to review and discover what is going on out there in blogland, and happily, many organizations are maintaining the sort of detailed news reporting that you find in these. I also discovered organizations that do a sort of blog-quality news item on their website, but do not support it with a RSS feed. Some of these organizations even have a feed option on their website, but it has never been utilized. There are 0rganizations who use online PDFs for newsletters, and they could easily add a short blog note to say a new PDF is available for review.

I have added what appear to be active blogs for groups in North America, which is about 75 of them. Some of these are dormant, sadly. Still, I usually see between 1-5 fresh blogs daily on this reader. I have saved and exported my finds, sorting, and renaming as an OPML file, which anyone can add to this or any other reader. PM me with your email address and I will send it to you.

The appearance of the software is like this, below. Happy New Year!
