To follow through on the "saying goodbye" thread, I figured looking ahead to some new, and returning steam stars in 2010 might be fun.

Possibilities off the top of my head:

Black River & Western 60 (test steamed in late 2009) - NJ
Southern 630 - TN
Southern 154 - TN
Southern 401 (test steamed in late 2009) - IL
Rayonier 70 - WA
Polson 2 - WI
SLSF 1630 - IL
UP 428 (test steamed in late 2009) - IL
Sierra 3 - CA

Others? Narrow Gauge? Historic Diesels?

CNJ #113 may very well be operational in 2010.

Probably not until 2011, but D&RGW #463 just might make it back into service in 2010.

According to the Austin Steam Train's web site, SP 2-8-2 #786 was a possibility for 2009. It didn't make in '09, so perhaps '10 will be the year.

Also, Deep River 2-4-4-2 #7 reportedly is nearing completion in Oregon--to run on the Oregon Coast RR tourist line when completed.

In Maine, Bridgeton & Harrison 2-4-4T #7's boiler has been undergoing repair at the Boothbay RR Museum shops and Monson 0-4-4T #3 is undergoing boiler repairs at the Sandy River tourist line. And the WW&F group recently received their new boiler for
0-4-4T #9. Don't know for sure if any or all of these will run in '10, but believe they are possibilities.

What about Baldwin 0-6-0 #26 at Steamtown? Every year seems to be "the one" for its return!

Black River & Western #60 was NOT test steamed in 09.

She is 100% ready to go is waiting for final inspections from the FRA.

Fred, some slight corrections. B&SR No 7's boiler is not at Boothbay, but rather undergoing repairs in Alna. Monson No 3 is the one being worked on in the Boothbay shop. Neither of those are likely to operate in 2010. But...with a bit of luck, WW&F No 9 could steam in 2010...

I am no authority here but...do not count on the 630 being ready this year. Every year for the past 5 or 6 years they have said "it will be ready in 6 months". But much of it (like the tender) still looks faaaar from being ready.

Great Western 51 was test steamed earlier this year, so count her in the mix for 2010.

But with 610 going out this year, and a lot of the steam crews work in the shop, there is a lot more motivation now to get her out. And you have to see current progress to believe.

Any idea what Mr. Birmingham may plan to do with his GW 51? I understand that Denver RTD just took ownership of the UP Branch from the north side of Denver towards Boulder for future light rail/commuter service. Any chance this could be a place to run the 51?
