| Post subject: | A round freight house? |
Recently published book "Rails to the Sea" has a photo of a circular freight station used by the Central of New Jersey. It was along the waterfront (New Jersey) somewhere across from New York City. Very odd design for a freight depot!<br>Anyone know how to contact a historical group dedicated to rail & marine transportation? I hear one exists.<br><br> |

Whoops! I missed one. There were TWO round freight houses along the Harlem River in the Bronx. The CNJ facility was just east of the Third Avenue swing bridge (still in use), and the site I described was a few hundred feet further north along the river. That location was the DL&W's subsidiary Harlem Transfer Co. HT Co. was also switched by an Ingersoll-Rand / Alco boxcab diesel starting in 1926 (an identical loco to CNJ 1000). Before that, a steam dummy was used. The HT Co. facility was removed after the E-L merger in 1960, because the Erie had a larger float yard<br>a few blocks away at 145th St. THAT lasted until 1970-71. <p>New York City had many of these disconnected carfloat-accessible-only freight yards. The New York Cross-Harbor RR in Brooklyn is the only one left (active).<br> hpincus@mindspring.com |
