Saw this postcard on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/RP960-Central-Railroad-New-Jersey-car-97-Pullman-/130397311019?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e5c49102b

The card says the car is in Florida. Anyone know its whereabouts or condition today?

It appears we're probably coming into the same lack of info. The latest I have on several websites says "Miami, FL", but I don't remember this car being stashed at the Gold Coast RR Museum when I was there several years ago.

One online report shows this car as being named "Jersey dawn". On that basis I perused the AAPRRCO list and found Amtrak 800314, now listed as "Virginia Dawn":
http://www.movie-trains.com/pvlist.html

From there, the trail runs stone cold. I can find NO mentions of a spotting of this car in service as "Virginia Dawn." Perhaps someone with an up-to-date AAPRRCO or UMLER list can tell us of 800314 is still listed?

The car was recently sold and is going to a tourist railroad in AZ

It's not the first time I have heard of a CNJ business car headed to the southwest. Maybe this time it will work out? As long as she comes home sometime. ;-)

That is a very interesting list. Is there anywhere showing what date a car got its 800xXX number and when it was removed from Amtrak's listing? That might help me on an upcoming project.

I remember CNJ observation #97, as "Havpalm". It was painted blue and white for a proposed steam tourist railroad that never happened.

thought a few in the group would like to see a picture, of the car before it was restored back in the 1980's and became the Jersey Dawn.

car has been stored for the last 15 years or so, on an outdoor siding on the FEC, and unfortunately the last 15 years has been very hard on the car... ( the picture pre dates its restoration to operation and later neglect ) ...

Although this is bringing up an older topic, thought a few people on the forum might want to see current pictures of CRR of NJ car 97... I believe this is a 1916 Pullman product built as the car "Jersey".. As mentioned it ran in private ownership as the "Jersey Dawn", was sold, became the "Virgina Dawn", moved to Florida and never ran again. It carried the Amtrak accounting number 800314.

These pictures were taken this week and show the current condition of the car.

Before the area below the belt rail was painted, it carried the name "Virginia Dawn"

This was an elegant car inside, with a kitchen, several bedrooms, and nice dining area. My recollection is the couches were purple velvet plush. There was an enormous photograph of the Jersey City yard, with an 0-6-0 switching.

Is she for sale? There is a glut of former CNJ equipment in need of help right now. #113 is the shining star, but man is there a lot left out there in tenuous situations.

Car 97 which sat neglected for 20 plus years or so was sold last year to an individual and should at some point, given if the FEC accepts it for interchange, leave south Florida... If you recall, back in the late 1970's and early 1980's it was owned by a guy from the Philadelphia area who bought it from a gentleman who had it I believe in Whippany NJ... He restored the car to operate on Amtrak, kept it in Philadelphia as the Jersey Dawn, and sold it to a gentleman who moved it to Florida and renamed it Virginia Dawn and relettered the car Central Railroad of Virginia ( from Central Railroad of New Jersey ) The car quickly went out of date, and began to suffer from lack of interest from the new owner and the humid wet climate of south Florida. The car eventually found its way to a weed covered siding in Fort Lauderdale, where it rests today, awaiting hopefully a chance at interchange.... For a time, I believe it was kept in Pompano Beach, at a siding that today no longer exists...

Its a special car that deserved a much better story...
