Wow! This makes the $250k boiler overhaul on 4-6-2 S.P. 2472 look like a small job - and it sure wasn't that way to us! (We installed new lower firebox side sheets, new superheater flues, and new tubes, and did the complete 49CFR230 inspection ["Form 4"] and certification).

Query - was B&M 3713 boiler built with one of the boiler-grade alloy steels popular in the 1930s (stronger - saved weight) that often - but not always, it depended on water quality, boiler pressure (250+psi much worse than 200psi), and other factors - proved more prone to cracking than plain carbon steel boiler-grade plate?

Gents, If 26 is any indication of the quality that Steamtown and the contractors can do, then I will be ready to bet she will roll out a "brand new" engine. Lots of work still to go on 26 but the shop guys are working hard on it.

That's not to say there weren't issues with cracking. The main cracking problems are near the check valve for the feedwater heater, which the B&M previously tried to repair unsuccessfully, and another crack in the dome liner. The reason the roof sheet needed to be renewed was because of decreased sheet efficiency; the B&M changed the type of flexible stay bolt sleeves that were used, without ever running the numbers to see what it did to the factor of safety.
