I contacted Matt Bumgarner, who is with the Alexander Chapter of the N.R.H.S. and he provided the following info:

"That history is all wrong... Was originally built for SAL as the “Calley”, went into MOW service, and then to ARC as the Alexandria (modified with rear platform.)

"She was sent in the 1990’s to the New Hope Valley RR in Bonsal, NC, but has languished on a side track nearby for more than 15 years."

Some more info to add to what Jerry posted:

First, the photo was taken in Taylorsville, NC, not Thomasville.

She was purchased from the Seaboard Coast Line in the late 1970’s for $2600 by the Alexander RR. The observation-coach was built by the Pullman Company during the early 1920’s and named the “Calley, " moved into MOW service and came to us as SAL #71419.

No idea what kind of shape she is in now, but she is still around.

I wonder if this is B&O X4303, ex-7403 Musina, nee-PULL, a HW Plan 2521 10 Sect - lounge observation? The vents on the roof (minus one, closest to the vestibule, but it was removed more recently than the roof was painted... its former location can be seen in the photo above) match the X4303...

The only discrepancy I can find with the car in Hamburg being the Musina is that in the three linked photos of the Musina in MofW service as #X4303, there is no sign of the B&O Rotunda Herald next to the vestibule that is still clearly visible in the photo of the car in Hamburg. Also, the Hamburg car is still in B&O blue, whereas the #X4303 was painted for Chessie System with a darker tone of blue, a yellow roof and trucks, and most importantly, "Chessie System" located right where the Rotunda Herald would otherwise be, and where it is still located on the car in Hamburg.

So, is it entirely possible we are looking at two different B&O Plan 2521 10S-lounge-observations??

The plot thickens...

Another mystery car:

242. C&O #389 baggage-express now owned by the C&O Historical Society in Clifton Forge. According to Jerry LaBoda's website, the #389 was converted from Franklin, a baggage-buffet-smoker-barber shop built to Plan #2602.

Herein lies the mystery with this car: there were only sixteen cars built to Plan #2602, all in Lot #3948 (1912). Of these sixteen, two were sold to C&O in 1941, Culvermere and Montclair. The Franklin was one of three sold to NYC, also in 1941.

What's interesting is that the three cars sold to NYC are not listed on Terry Link's NYC passenger car roster pages (http://www.canadasouthern.com/caso/NYC-MODELS-PASS.htm), so I don't have disposition information. One possibility is that these three cars were simply purchased by NYC and scrapped without being put into service. Hmm...

Is it possible that these three cars were sold by NYC to other railroads, and the Franklin was purchased by C&O and converted to #389??

Someone (a better NYC or C&O historian than I) can probably expand on this, but there was some equipment movement between the two roads on the Canadien side of the border in the '50s. I seem to recall a group of GP-7s going from one to the other in that time frame. Perhaps there were some cars involved? Just speculation.

There is a conflict between the book by Wayner and what Tom has listed in the Pullman CCR... the book shows that the car was sold to the C&O, which rebuilt it to a baggage - express while the CCR shows it going to NYC. It is quite possible and maybe even likely that NYC sold these cars to the C&O (when???) as all three were converted to baggage - express cars. According to the book Franklin became C&O 389, Ontwood became C&O 388 and Overfield became C&O 387. One thing that I find interesting is that these cars were sold to the NYC in June 1941 but according to the book were not sold to the C&O until August 1941... it may be that they were specifically acquired by NYC with an eye towards working out a deal with the C&O (maybe for some hoppers???) which is likely why they are not shown on Terry Link's roster... they never entered service in any form on NYC. Both of the cars that C&O purchased directly from Pullman were acquired in July 1941 so this seems to be a reasonable scenario.

This car was the subject of this thread: http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=30223, in which the possible scrapping of the car by SRNJ was discussed. Does anyone know if this car has yet been scrapped, or is still in storage??

Update on a "where is it now?" car:

Well, not so much a "where is it now?" car anymore as a "turned into razorblades" car:

Back on page #7 of this thread, I had inquired as to the present location and status of N&W MofW #521413, which was originally 1DR-parlor Elanette (Lot #3951, Plan #2418, 1912) to N&W coach #752 to MofW #526400 to #521413. It was determined that the car was sold by TVRM to Pete Clausen, then to Georgia-Florida Rail Net and located in Albany, GA.

Well, Stephen S. Syfrett posted info regarding the fate of #521413 on page #1 of the linked Harriet thread, tenth post from the top.

Another survivor here in Washington:

249. Blytheswood (Lot #4271, Plan #2410A, 1914/43, 12S-1DR, GN)--Tourist #2548 retained (12/31/1948)--sold to GN as MofW kitchen-bunk-diner #O3280 (1953) to business in Spokane Valley, WA with PRR E8A #5808 and BN caboose #11389, painted in SP Daylight colors with "Spokane International Railroad" in the letterboard.* The E8A, caboose, and the Blytheswood were listed on Ozark Mountain Railcar back in 2010--does anyone have knowledge of a sale??--see here: http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1947317 (Richard Olson photo)

Some Additional Survivors:

Henrietta was one of 44 parlors built in Lot #4264, and according to the CCR database, NYC acquired ten in 1941, including Henrietta. However, like the Franklin discussed above, the Henrietta and eight of the other nine do not show up in Terry Link's NYC passenger roster, which leads me to conclude that NYC sold these cars in a similar fashion to the Franklin, with CN acquiring at least one (the Henrietta and converting it to a coach. Does anyone have info on which railroads acquired Lot #4264 parlors from NYC??

The Alexandria is located on the property of the Shearon Harris Nuclear plant. It is visible on Google maps NW of the plant itself on a side track in the woods. There is an ex-NS (old NS) camp car and an ACL Baggage Car there also owned by New Hope Valley. The power company stores other rail equipment on site as well.

The challenge for us is twofold. First just getting access to the cars in a post 9/11 world is very difficult. The benefit is that no one else has access either, so vandalism is not an issue. The most recent photos of the cars that we have are from 2004; it is unknown how much deterioration has occurred since then.

Second, we as an organization are still maturing to the point where we can fund and plan the logistics necessary to move the cars, store them and preserve them. Since we are not connected to the general system, they will have to come out by truck. The success of the upcoming move and use of our RDC currently in Parkton in addition to completion of two additional storage tracks at Bonsal will drive repatriation of the nuclear plant cars.

Don't expect an announcement soon, but know that the cars are on our radar; we haven't forgotten about them!

Thanks,
Mike MacLean
