Two of these ten cars became Louisville and Nashville office cars, one became a Chicago and Eastern Illinois office car,...

Those two would actually be three... PULL Mt. Tom, which became L&N 364 named Ohio River and later sold to the Morristown & Eastern, Mt. Hoffman, which became L&N 365 which was later converted to a Track Geometry car, and Mt. Thielsen, which became L&N 375 and later CNW 401 [3rd] which was named Chcago late in service on the CNW and now resides in Corpus Christi, Tx.

Never have been able to understand Seaboard System's choice to sell of the L&N business cars, which were superior in accommodations and looks to that of SCL cars...

PULL Mt. Peale was rebuilt by C&EI to business car 354 and later sold (after the split between MoPac and L&N).

3. Clover Colony (Lot #4574, Plan #4036I, 1920/40, 8S-5DB, ex-Bernadotte)--sold to SP (1948) to #8351 (1957) to Jack Ferris (1964??) to High Iron Co. (1968) to Micky Wolfson (1972**) moved to Gold Coast RR Museum (1986) to Pete Clausen (1993) to TVRM (1993)

*********************************

Clover was sold by HICO about 1973, to two former HICO people, Rudy Morgenfruh and Larry Haines. They applied roller bearings and C-S tightlock couplers to the car, and by 1974, were running it in conjunction with other PVs in the northeast-- George Pins's PRR 120 and Shenandoah (a B&O/C&O 10-6), and Larry Battley's "Lionel Ives" (heavyweight business car) and NY-RRE "Eugene Field" (SL-SF 14-4). It was the start of AAPRCO, which was founded by Pins and Morgenfruh and Haines and some others, about 1973-74. There were more far-ranging trips throughout the 70s and early 80s for Clover and some of those other cars.

Morgenfruh and Haines sold the car in the early-mid 80s to Wolfson and he subsequently moved the car to a home base at GCRM (Wolfson was/is a Miami-based "patron of the arts").

Rudy Morgenfruh relocated from Long Island, NY to California in the late 80s and I recall he became active at a railway museum out there (forget which one).

This car is at the Evansville (IN) Museum Transporation Center, on display with an L&N diner and a Milwaukee Road 0-6-0. I believe the car is in good repair and has been at the museum since 1966.

A mystery car has been identified, and another survivor has been added to the list:

A Former Mystery Car:

Back on pages #10 and #14:

Well, with the other 3 Plan #2521 cars acquired by B&O accounted for, I think it is safe to say that the car in Hamburg is the...

241. Magdala (Lot #3944, Plan #2521E, 1911, 10S-lng-obs)--sold to B&O #7401 (1948) to MofW #X-4301 (1950) sold to unknown party and stored in Hamburg, PA (when??)

The other 3 cars are:

I have not been able to locate any recent photos of the Musina, the only lead being that David Farlow commented on the page for Marty's photo that Whitewater Valley had acquired the car and was planning to move it to Connersville; that was in 2010.

235. Courtier (Lot #4353, Plan #2521B, 1915, 10S-lng-obs)--sold to B&O #7400 (1948) to MofW #X-4300 (1950) renumbered to #940704 (when??) to Chessie System sold to WMSR (when??)

Another Survivor:

Bage on page #13, these 2 cars came up in the discussion, but at the time, neither was identified as being extant:

I am in the process of filling in the blanks for the conversions/dispositions of Pullman sleepers and parlors acquired by Northern Pacific.

Now, besides 2 business cars, the Plan #3973A Chief-series, the Palm Point, and the Plan #4084 Poplar-series sleepers, NP acquired numerous parlors and sleepers which were converted to a variety of types, including coaches, baggage cars, etc. The NP was unique in the acquisition of several 14 section tourist cars, which were also later converted to coaches. Several of the cars acquired by NP are extant, and I'm wondering if there are additional survivors which have not been mentioned yet in this thread. Knowing the numbers for all the cars converted by NP would be helpful in finding additional survivors. Also, are there any additional cars that were acquired by NP, but which are not listed below? Thanks in advance!

#6xx-Series Coaches:

I'm also looking for info regarding the seating capacity* of these coaches, plus any info regarding cars that were sold, scrapped, or transferred to MofW.

*The Minnesota Transportation Museum website's page for #631/#1102 lists 86 seats. Was the seating capacity for all the #6xx-series cars uniform, or were there several different variations? Thanks in advance!

Conflict:

Wayner lists two cars as having been converted to #632. Was there a first #632 which was either renumbered or retired before the second #632 was converted, or is this an error in the records? Thanks in advance!

In looking through Wayner's "Complete Roster", I noticed that Jack Ferris also acquired:

Poplar Plains (Lot #4624, Plan #4060, 1921/37, 6S-6DB, ex-Holmes)--sold to NYC (CCC&StL) #11046 (1948) returned to Pullman (1958) sold to Kaplan* (1961) sold to Jack Ferris* (1965)

*Madden lists the sale to Kaplan, Wayner lists the sale to Jack Ferris.

Does anybody know if this car is still extant?

Ok, here's one for the powers to be here to help on.

You have already discussed NS-31, Former Southern R-1 and so on.

So here is another one for you/group.

What's the back ground of ATSF Heavyweight Office Car 55. This was turned into Conrail 21 (Track Geometry Car) in the 1980's and then became NS-36 (Track Geometry Car) post merger 1999 to present. Otherwise I'm looking for what the car was before ATSF Office Car 55, was it a sleeper? Was it built as an Office Car? What was it built as in 1924. Rumor has it this car was built in 1924 by Pullman. Ok you guys have a way with the details, Show me what you know! :o)

Oh also don't go by the window band, I know it's been changed at least twice since 1999 under Norfolk Southern.

This is information I have gleaned from several sources. Originally built as USRA 82 the car was sold to the Santa Fe after WWI, becoming ATSF 32. At some point the car was modernized and was renumbered ATSF 55. To CR 21 and then to NS 36. I do not know the dates on the renumberings nor the sale by ATSF to CR.

USRA 82 was assigned to one of the USRA managers who was the President of the Santa Fe. The Pullman builder's photos of ATSF #30 and USRA #82 appear to be nearly identical. The Pullman Lot (order) number on these photos are the same -- Lot 4530. This would indicate that they were ordered together and the delivery of the second one coincided with the USRA administration. Both of these are very similar to the later Santa Fe 30-series business cars.

The builder's photos are reproduced in the Santa Fe Modlers' book about the ATSF business cars.

The Santa Fe Modelers' book about the business cars does not list the Pullman floor numbers of the cars. If it did, we could confirm that that they were done to the same basic design.

Brian,

Thank you too for helping fill in the early history of what is now Norfolk Southern 36. Trying to put together as much as I can on this car when it comes to documented History, drawings and images of it's "time-line".

USRA-82 (No Image or drawing yet)
ATSF-32 (No Image or drawing yet)
ATSF-55 (Check)
Conrail-21 (Check)
NS-36 (Check)

Thanks again for all the help up to this point.

Given the lot number (4530)the IRM Pullman can probably copy the specification sheets for the order. From that a floor plan drawing can probably be determined -- and obtained.

For Santa Fe photos and information, check out the original (oversize and probably hard-to-find original Shine and Ellington publication on the ATSF business cars) or the smaller format book published by the Santa Fe Railway Historical & Modeling Society (this is still in print).
