I grew up in Normal, and walked, rode my bike and finally drove under that "subway" for 20 years and left before the new underpass was built. Many times when I walked or rode under it, I was plenty scared as people tended to wheel those 1950 -1960 land barges thru there at a good clip, despite stop signs at the intersections on either end. Considering the number of trains thru there every day, it was not only a great safety feature, but many times freights entering or leaving Bloomington yard would be stopped short of the Illinois Central crossing when leaving, or strung out all the way back to it when entering. Then, outside of the "subway" there was only the Main street viaduct to get from one side of town to the other. Besides, some how all the girls that I liked in high school, all seemed to live close to the subway and on the other side from where I did.
