Seattle City Light #6

This came through on my Flickr feed. She looks amazing for being an outdoor display locomotive. I think she was in tourist service at one time?

#6 is in Newhalem which is a Seattle City Light company town on Highway 20. It did run between Sedro Wooley and Concrete in the late 70's early 80's?. Never did get around to riding it.

Despite being non-operational, #6 is my personal favorite among steam locomotives. A photo of her can be found in the PC game "Rails Across America". She is definitely a beautiful locomotive, and I would love to see her run (perhaps at Snoqualmie, one day?)

If larger gas or diesel locomotives were more common at the time #6 was built it might never have been built. J.D. Ross who was Seattle City Light Superintendent at the time the Skagit River dam's were started was a big proponent of using internal combustion. The line started using large speeders and a converted truck. It wasn't until the second dam, Diablo, was started that larger motive power was needed. In 1939 a center cab diesel was built by Skagit Steel in Sedro Wooley, WA using the trucks from Portland Traction electric locomotive 1403.

Overall this was a very interesting railroad.
