The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum will be putting 2-8-0 #630 into service in the very near future. A few things are left to finish, but the tender was filled with coal today. Isn't she a pretty sight?

Thank you for posting Steve. The 630 is beautiful. Congratulations to all of the hard work that has taken place over the last decade to get her up and running again. I cannot wait to see and hear the 630 operate in the near future. Steven Ashley |

No red cab roof?............Aaaaaaaaarrrrhhhh!!!!!!!!!....... tell me that you at least have a "brass eagle" waiting to go over the headlight........... :) |

I've hyped up 630 to the point that even my non-railfan girlfriend wants to take a trip down to Chattanooga when she's in service. :) |

I believe it was the property of the late, great, "Uncle Jim" Bistline, one of the finest men I've been priveledged to know. |

Never mind the fact that Morris County Central's Southern H-4 2-8-0 385 (during a brief time in the 1970s). 722 and 4501 were the only Southern freight locomotives to ever be painted green or the fact that green is not historically accurate. Then there is the whole debate over Southern Railway steam locomotive cab colors. From every reliable source I have seen, the cab roofs of both freight and passenger Southern steam locomotives were painted black and not red. It was not until the steam excursion era that the cab roofs of 4501, 630 and 722 were painted red (at least to my knowledge, someone else may prove me wrong). However, there are still arguments to this date over how X locomotive should be painted. |

Regardless of what historical research may prove or disprove regarding "red cab roofs", W. Graham Claytor, Jim Bistline, and Bill Purdie liked them. In that sense, it is very much a part of 630's history. All joking aside, TVRM has done a great job. She looks wonderful. |

Red cab roofs are rumoured to be CNO&TP practice of times gone by, but 6330 certainly had a black roof on the final run in 1953. There is some evidence to support a 2-8-2 in green at some point, but I can't recall the details off hand. As for the eagle, I've got one - they are indeed cast iron painted with gold paint. The style of eagles used on Southern engines were actually ornamental light fixtures for another company's boiler gauge lights. Extra points if you actually know what I am referring to. There were two styles which were almost identical - one is a two piece casting, and the other is a three piece. There is still one mounted on S&A 750 and, yes, the one used on 2716 was Jim Bistline's. He surely was an always affable gentleman, but a shrewd investor and legal mind. As someone (I think it may have been Jim Boyd of Railfan) pointed out and illustrated with a photo in a magazine years ago (I think it was the eagle on T&P 610, maybe the issue in 1977 with 610 on the cover), when those specific eagles were viewed completely side-on in silhouette, the silhouette somehow resembled the likes of Godzilla....... |
