Saw this on fb. A wooden passenger car who knows how old. They are getting very hard to find, and it must be worth saving. Might be a good project for operations like Strasburg with historic wooden passenger cars.

Any idea on the identity of this car? Given the arched windows and the deck roof visible, it almost looks like it could be a streetcar body with the end platforms missing. Whatever it is, though, it doesn't look like there's much left to save.

Could be some good paint samples on that body.

I'm inclined to agree it's the remains of an old streetcar. Besides the windows and the deck roof, the car seems a bit small, particularly in width (based on the sizes of the people in the interior shots). It also appears to have curved lower sides, a common characteristic of trolleys, but much less common, as far as I know, on railroad equipment.

It even looks like a part of the roof to the platform, and a set of doors, with some door hardware, is visible in one of the photographs.

Some of it could be considered worth saving, as a "lesson" exhibit on car construction, though a full restoration to something operable would be very long and arduous. We know know anything about its identity, builder, or a lot of other details.

The lower sides don't look curved enough to me to be a streetcar. I'm not on FB so I don't know where in Jersey, but it looks more like a 9th Ave Elevated car to me. If so it could date to around 1870. https://www.nycsubway.org/wiki/The_9th_ ... ds_Shuttle

I hadn't considered that rapid transit cars had deck roofs too - it certainly could be one. Either way, though, deck roofs were a characteristic found almost solely on electric cars.

Looks like it did!!

Any other thoughts on the possible origin of this car?

That makes me think, what else survived other then the body? Frame, trucks, etc under the car? That would help determine identity and what could be done with it.

Looks like a trolley to me. I can't get a window count with the way the photos are angled.
This trolley from Keyport NJ came up in a quick search.

This is Colorado Springs #59, a 1901 Laclede. Note the short panel on the leading end of the platform.

In the comments section on Facebook, Frank Hicks has identified the carbody as a Trenton streetcar, Built by Brill either in 1911 or 1914. A link to what the car would have looked like: http://newdavesrailpix.com/odds/nj/htm/trt01.htm
Backing this up is evidence in one of the pictures, where a "2xx", possibly "26x" or 28x" can be seen under the paint (these Trenton streetcars were numbered in the 200s.)

Frank would know. She's missing a lot but I assume she is the only Trenton car left.
