I stumbled on this site recently. It lists existing stations in Jamaica with a short history of each and has some small photos. There is a 4-8-0 in storage in Kingston, I would love to get some up-to-date information/photo on her.

Last message I saw a decade ago was that the 4-8-0 was in bad shape or vandalized.

I have some photos of the Jamaican Railway at

As I recall, the Twelve-Wheeler was built by one of the Canadian builders (Montreal Locomotive Works perhaps?) and late in the game (1947 maybe?). There was more than one engine in the purchase, but I am not sure exactly how many. One of the group was destroyed for a movie being made in that country. Vandalized or in bad shape, the great news is that the engine survives. Hopefully a restoration might one day be undertaken. Is there a rail enthusiast group in Jamaica?

The builder's information is Canadian Locomotive Co. 2123/1944. I have an undated picture of it in storage that shows it looking dusty; but otherwise intact.

From what I understand there is not really any organized rail preservation in Jamaica although there are some folks who love trains. I was surprised to find an invertory of stations available onine. Engine 54 was held as a historic relic after operating into the 1960's. Trains are part of the Jamaican culture for sure there is even an engine 54 song.

Well, let's have another go at becoming an "instant expert," courtesy of the internet:

A surprising collection of trolley pix:

Apparently service was restored just earlier this year:

More looking:

If that photo isn't mislabeled, the Jamaican Railway rostered at least one former US Army S-160:

Other pix:

There's another trolley shot here:

Not a proper roster, but some equipment dimensions:

A Flicker photo, with a curiosity--if there have been no trains in a long time, how come the main rails are shiny?

Have fun.

Hmm, perhaps the death of the railway in Jamaica has been exagerated?

Horrible shot, but what are those diesels? Are they some sort of Alco product?

I saw the bauxite railway during a 1999 visit. They were using SD38s and still had an old Baldwin kicking around.

Yup; they're probably DL-532Bs being used to haul bauxite.
