Friday, December 7th

Earl Pardini, Harry Jameson and George Peck took the 401 across bridge C9 for a load test conducted for our bridge engineer. The bridge was subsequently certified ready for passenger service.

Saturday. December 8th

Shortly after 1 pm this afternoon, CMRR RS-1 401 pulled the first revenue passenger train in nearly 59 years onto the Esopus Creek Bridge (C-9) in Kingston to the obvious delight of all ticket holders aboard the special Holiday Train.

On the west end of the bridge, a track crew dropped 29 ties from the work flat, and built an additional 60' of track onto the west approach to class 2 standards. Approximately 25 old ties were removed. 12 new ties were inserted and spiked. By the end of the day, 401 was able to clear the bridge with the consist stopped on the girder portion. Crews will attempt to build out to 6 rail lengths west of bridge tommorow to accomodate the entire train. Today's track crew included:George Peck, Art Vogel, Greg Vaughn, Dave Hilliard, Peter Fluchere, Dick Wilhelm, Gary Lowe, and Mark Glaser.

Train crew consisted of Earl Pardini, Engineer, Ray Farrell, Conductor, Dan Howard, Brakeman, Tony Gambino and Will Willsey, Brakemen, Mimi Pardini and Walt Otto, Car Attendants, Thom Johnson, Ticket Agent, and of course Santa and Mrs. Santa.

Sunday, December 9th

On Sunday, a track crew including George Peck, Gary Lowe, and Mark Glaser pushed the CMRR container/work flat to within several car legnths east of the 'Lion Gardiner' today with the railroad's car mover. This move reoreinted the flat east end out for a return trip to Cornell St. to pick up addl. ties later this week. This is the farthest west a full size railcar has traveled past C-9 since the movement of the coaches to their present location @ Rte. 209. Later, the crew inserted eight more ties as part of the C-9 west approach track buildup.

Train crew included Earl Pardini, Engineer, Walt Otto, Conductor, Tony Bocchino and Will Willsey, Flagmen, Mimi Pardini, Car Attendent, Dave Cenova and Bruce Devorkin, ticket agents, and of course Santa and Mrs. Santa.

What are your plans for the assorted coaches and other equipment stored at the rt 209 crossing? Refurbish or scrap or sell?

Train99,

We plan to move all the stored equipment back to Cornell Street this winter.

The "Lion Gardiner", which belongs to the ESRM, will be scrapped if it can't be given away.

The remaining three coaches will be stabilized, and one will be chosen initially for restoration, likely former EL 4322, which matches our other two restored coaches.

The ballast hopper and gondola will become part of our work train.

All the stored cars are fully functional mechanically despite their appearance.

Dave Hilliard and George Bain completed the railing modifications on the Westbrook Station's loading platform/ramp. Alex Sorenson assisted by cleaning up the work area in preparation for train operations. Earl Pardini assisted with a few tasks, including sawing 3 bundles of balusters to fit the railings on the horizontal platforms and removing the old ropes.

Also in Kingston today, a track crew continued work west of C-9, tamping and spiking 10 ties previously inserted. Additionally, 6 ties were placed under the rail, but not spiked. This resulted in nearly 125' of track with new wood underneath, allowing the locomotive, side dump, and the front quarter of the passenger flat to clear the bridge. All trains well patronized. Participating were: George Peck, Dick Wilhelm, and Mark Glaser.
