Saturday, February 11th

Writes Mark Glaser: "Saturday's crew focused on several projects in Shokan. Long idled tamper was lifted,placed on the track and towed just west of the section house awaiting modification and fitting of the track broom. The Hi-rail MOW truck was restarted,driven to the DEC crossing and placed on the track facing east. Approximately 36 relay ties were loaded and delivered to the Longyear switch worksite at Andrews Lane. At the end of the day, the replacement engine block for RS-1 400 was picked up and is now on blocking @ Cornell St. Saturday's crew included, Earl Pardini, Ernie Klopping, Dave Hilliard, John Patane, and myself."

From Art Vogel: "We got a lot done Saturday. Neil Remsen had time off from school & drove 7 hrs. to help! Joe Klapkowski, George Peck, Neil Remsen, Dave Heick & myself loaded all the switch parts & brought some back . Earl's trailer is FULL! track, points, frog etc."


Sunday, February 12th

No crews worked on Sunday due to cold weather.

Saturday, February 18th

George Peck led a crew that continued work on the switch at MP 24.75, collecting ballast and aligning switch timbers. He was helped by Art Vogel, Dave Heick, and Ernie Hunt.

Sunday, February 19th

From Mark Glaser: Today in Shokan, a crew consisting of Earl Pardini, George Peck, Art Vogel, and myself cleared the main line east from the DEC crossing at Shokan to just short of MP 14. Many large "leaners" remaining from Hurricane Irene were removed with the Pettibone crane. The Hi-rail pickup and Kalamazoo were used as support vehicles. "

Saturday, February 25th

Earl Pardini will continue the move of the pettibone crane over the rails to Kingston starting at Shokan at 10am. Bring chain saws and picks and shovels for a small washover near MP 14.


Sunday, February 26th

George Peck will assembling switch parts at Andrew's lane. Crew will start at Andrew's Lane at 9am.

Earl Pardini will start at 10am either at Cornell Street (if the crane move is complete) or will continue moving the crane from the stopping spot from Saturday.

Saturday, February 25th

Earl Pardini led a crew moving the pettibone crane from Shokan to Kingston. The crew consisted of John Patane, Walt Otto, Peter Fluchere, and George Bain. They had to stop at MP 13.8 due to poor track conditions.

George Peck worked at the new switch at MP 24.75 and finished realigning the switch timbers.

Sunday, February 26th:

Writes Mark Glaser:

"Today at Cornell St., the Kingston tamper's 2 cylinder diesel engine was freed up, cylinder liners and pistons removed, and cylinder head partially disassembled for reconditioning. An old set of log tongs were modified to fish out bridge timbers from the staging area pile just off the high fill on the approach to C-9. Today's crew included Earl Pardini, Ernie Klopping, Dave Hilliard, and myself."

Cornell Street yard will open at 9am. Plans are to do more trackwork in Kingston, weather permitting.

On Saturday, Earl Pardini led a crew that moved the Pettibone Crane and Hi-Rail Truck from Shokan to Kingston. The equipment is now in Cornell Street yard and will be used for trackwork and C9 work. Earl was helped by John Patane, Walt Otto, Will Willsey, and Dave Hilliard.

Saturday at Art Vogel's shop George P. Dave Heick & Art Vogel took the CMRR's John Deer 410 backhoe all apart for a engine overhaul.


Sunday, March 4th

On Sunday, Earl Pardini, Ernie Klopping and Dave Hilliard continued repairs on the Kingston Tamper. John Patane, Will Willsey and Chris Burtt marked ties for replacement in Kingston.

Saturday, March 10th

From Mark Glaser: "At Cornell St. on Saturday, repairs were made to the Hi-Rail pickup's Auto-Crane. The truck's rear platform/bed was modified for better stowage of welding/cutting tanks. Later in the day, a track inspection was performed from C-9 to Wash. Ave.; ties were marked for replacement as needed. An alignment gauge for setting track on C-9 was fabricated. Participating today were Earl Pardini, Jim Bruck, George Peck, John Patane, and myself."


Sunday, March 11th

From Mark Glaser: "On Sunday, a crew including Earl Pardini, John Watson and myself separated and center marked the C-9 Bridge running rails which had been cabled off the deck and were lying east of MP 5. The O&W switch was inspected and measurements taken for tie replacement. At Cornell St., Ernie Klopping continued work on the Kingston tamper, George Peck delivered 105# track bolts for the bridge project."

That long-disused tamper - did that come from the Valley Railroad? It looks familiar.
If is is the VRR tamper, that beast was very tired 40 years ago!

I believe it did, and came with the ESRM's other equipment in thhe mid-eighties. Of course we we will be removing the tamping equipment - however the main engine and body appear to be sound. Amazing after so many years of disuse!

On Saturday, George Peck Art Vogel and Ray Farrell started unloading switch parts at MP 24.75. They set the new frog in place and unloaded other parts.

From Mark Glaser in Kingston: "On Saturday, a track maintenance crew consisting of Earl Pardini, Jim Bruck, Peter Fluchere, Walt Otto, Bob Blake and myself marked eight and replaced six ties just west of Elmendorf OHBR @3.3."


Sunday, March 18th

From Mark Glaser: "Earl Pardini and Ernie Klopping worked in the yard on Sunday on a tie grapple for the backhoe and the Kingston tamper respectively. John Patane and myself excavated down to and inspected the remainder of the ties in the Elmendorf/Albany Ave. cut."

On Saturday, George Peck led a crew including Art Vogel and myself, and we managed to install all the rail at the new switch at MP 24.75. The mainline track is bolted up all the way to the points.

Sunday, March 25th

From Mark Glaser: "On Sunday, the C-9 crew returned to the bridge replacing ten timbers in the second bay and positioning and spiking the first permanent running rail on the north side.Old timbers and OTM were cabled out of the third bay. A rail mounted spiker and large compressor were delivered to the work site. Today's crew included Earl Pardini, John Patane,Bob Blake and myself. Ernie Klopping worked on the tamper @ Cornell St. and assisted the bridge crew in the afternoon."

Peter Fluchere manned the CMRR booth at the train show in Kingston.


Monday, March 26th

Earp Pardini led a crew consisting of Todd Syska and Jim Bruck. They placed twenty more bridge timbers on C9 and cleared out two more bays. 4 of 17 bays on the truss have now been completed. Another rail was placed on the bridge.
