The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum has donated the floor assembly and wood beam trucks of B&O 20 to the Northwestern Pacific Railroad Historical Society. The components will be used to restore Central Pacific Railroad 29 (later NWP 123) at the NWPRRHS facility in Petaluma, CA. B&O 20 was built in 1868 for the Central Railroad of New Jersey by the Wason Manufacturing Company of Springfield, MA. Central Pacific 29 was built by Wason in 1869. As built, the two cars were nearly identical in design and construction, B&O 20 having one window more on each side (16 versus 15) and two rectangular vent windows at each end. CP 29 did not have the vent windows. B&O 20 and its sister car No. 21 were in operable condition when placed on display in the museum’s roundhouse at 901 West Platt Street in Baltimore. Unfortunately the roundhouse roof collapsed in February 2003. One of the roof truss assemblies fell along the full length of No. 20, crushing the car body. The impact was so severe it broke one truck’s oak side frame and snapped the underlying steel equalizing bar. Because B&O 21 was untouched by the roof collapse the museum decided against reconstructing the damaged car. No. 20’s internal furnishings were salvaged, the wall pieces were moved to the car shop, and the trucks, roof and floor assembly were stored behind the shop buildings. Four members of our Restoration Team (Steve Atnip, Jeff and Don Millerick, and the author) flew to Baltimore on January 25. The next day they were joined in the salvage operations by East Coast members Dick Donat and Steve Kendall and by John Teichmoeller, a member of the B&O Railroad Museum. The salvage team cut the floor into two pieces by removing the original Wason queen posts and truss rod turn buckles then cutting out the sills between the needle beams. Most of the air and hand brake components, couplers, train air signal system and truss rod ends are still attached to the floor halves. The floor halves, removed components and trucks were loaded onto a flatbed trailer on January 29. It should arrive in Petaluma on February 4. Salvage of the remaining parts will begin immediately upon arrival. The trucks will be rebuilt this year, funded in part by a matching funds grant of $3,400 awarded in 2011 by the National Railway Historical Society. The NWPRRHS is grateful for the generosity of the B&O Railroad Museum. Their donation of the parts will allow us to complete the restoration of CP 29 several years sooner than anticipated. Mike, I'm glad to hear those parts and pieces went to a good home. From the work you guys have done in the past and have underway at the present, it looks like everything will be put to good use. Taylor |
