I was recently watching a video of 4501 running an excursion from Chattanooga to Cumberland Gap in 1985. What struck me as strange was that the '01 appeared to have red letters and numbers instead of the usual gold. Do I just have a bad tape, or was she really painted like that at some point. Also, the whistle she ran with at that time is one of the best I've heard. Anyone know which one it was?
Thanks in advance,
AD
Andrew:
No, the only red on the 4501 was on the headlight, number board, and cab roof. She was lettered in gold until 1996, when TVRM returned her to black livery with yellow lettering.
I was lucky enough to shoot the trips you refer to. (They actually originated in Knoxville, not Chattanooga - 4501 had just arrived from eastern North Carolina, and ran on the N&W out of Bristol the following weekend.) That is truly one underappreciated piece of railroad - some terrific scenery.
Just curious - is it a commercial video?
JAC
