This is probably the sight to which you refer:

http://www.pvillage.com/images/bbtrain.jpg

In spite of the date (posted on a website of questionable veracity and literacy), that photo is no later than the late 1970s, as best as I can guess.

Examine the site today--on U.S. 11 east of Bloomsburg, Pa. just east of and opposite Independence Honda and in the yard of the aptly-named Tower Micro, on Google Maps--and you'll see the station and water tank and nothing else. A determined searcher might make out a trace of the former track right-of-way in the lots to the east.

The station is a replica, but the water tank-- http://www.pvillage.com/images/tower.JPG --is more likely to get railfans doing a double take and driving off the road.

I saw that one, but I don't recognize the blue water tower, isn't that when it was in NJ along Route 9? I recall seeing something nearby the original location off of Route 11.

This Youtube footage must have been made after it closed, because #117 was torn apart.

The hopper cars used in filming The Mollie Maguires were studio-built cars. The Reading cocoa bean cars looked like wooden boxcars without side doors. They had hopper bottoms and roof hatches. The railroad scenes were all filmed at Carroll Park except for the explosion and wreck, which I believe was filmed at Eckley.

The photo with the blue water tank is definitely not Bloomsburg. There is not now and never was a water tank like that anywhere nearby. After the CP&W was sold off, No. 117 and the two Civil War coaches went to Virginia first, I believe, somewhere down along I-81. Then they were moved to New Jersey and finally wound up at Pine Creek. The PRR bobber caboose was sold to a private party on Long Island. Pine Creek got the Newfoundland coach.

I don't recall any more whether No. 117 was torn down by Carroll Stahl or the subsequent owners. Whoever it was, they hired a commercial boiler shop to make repairs to the firebox. The boiler guys had apparently never seen a locomotive firebox, because they had no idea what the mud ring was for. They cut off the bottom 12 inches or so of the firebox and replaced the sheets inside and out. When they reassembled everything, they welded up square corners on the firebox, not fastened to any sort of foundation ring. I don't know if they ever fired the thing up after that....

Interesting, I figured some of the stuff was movie made props but I did not know they went that far to transport #117 to Eckley, well I read that the budget for the film was $11 Million so that probably would not be a problem to do.

I recognized the scenery for some of the scenes as being the locale in Bloomsburg in the screen shots attached, but the one with the track explosion made my wonder. The boulders looking nothing like the area where the place was.

Thanks for the info!

The two bottom shots are certainly along the original CP&W. The top one may also, courtesy some creative work with blue screens and other movie magic. I was at the CP&W a few times during the filming, and one thing I remember clearly is how they used the locomotive crane to suspend a scrim of some sort to hide the Climax and traffic on the adjacent highway for some of the head-on shots of the train arriving and leaving the station.

That explains the track explosion scene, looks like the color is off and they might have worked some movie magic on that one, the actual derailment and explosion must have involved the actual hopper cars but probably were towed by something else?

In case there is anyone that actually cares and wants to read a bit more on the "Molly Maguires" movie, with a bit of socio-political commentary mixed in:

http://pjmedia.com/eddriscoll/2013/10/1 ... epage=true

If nothing else, it shows the movie is now available on Netflix and Amazon Movies, if you want to watch it.

Sadly, the original videos in the first post were removed for copyright issues.

I've had an intersted in the Carroll Park and Western Railroad for as long as I can remember. Check out my website for a page that I have created for it. You can find it at http://www.BerwickRailFan.com under the Excursions To Our Past section. There I have photos, info and imags from the CP&W. Enjoy.

Equally of interest is that the "suggested" videos also show some Rascals shorts in color. Haven't actually looked at them, but I wonder if they are genuinely color or if they were colorized. If genuine color, then that's something else brought back we never knew about.

Well, this is one I had been looking for and couldn't find--for Pullman fans.

And here (courtesy of a poster on the Classic Trains forum) is the earlier silent version (1924) with Farina instead of Stymie getting the foot caught in the track and being repeatedly run over by the ATSF 4-6-2. The latter part, however, complete with arguably the finest kid's train ever built right down to feline superheat, is novel and well worth watching.

And who says railfans have trouble appealing to good-looking members of the fair sex?

It's actually Farina in both films getting run over by the locomotive.
