There really is no way an organization can accept as a volunteer someone who is on the sex offender registry. The potential liabilities are too great. "You knew he was a child molester and let him work . . ." No one wants the litigation and no one wants the adverse publicity.

We are not in the social welfare business and have no expertise in determining whether someone is rehabilitated or whether they will reoffend. Even those in the business of dealing with sex offenders have a poor track record in this regard.

The volunteer intake process should advise potential volunteers that a sex offender and criminal record check will be performed. Check with local counsel to determine the correct way to do this under relevant state and federal laws.
