So the older color photo shows the locomotive in a green paint scheme and the restoration in blue. What eras are these from?

Where are you getting green from? Blue & grey are the documented colors. The locomotives were painted by the factory in 1946, then repainted in a simplified version in the mid-50's, which is what we are matching.

Gary,

I'm sorry but on the color photo of 662 in service on your facebook site that sure looks like green to me. And no I'm not color blind. That slide must have really shifted colors.

It looks "dirty" blue on mine. We matched the colors to a CW toolbox that was the property of one of the CW engineers at the time. The box had been painted at the same time the locomotives recieved their mid-1950's repaint with the same paint. The box remained in the family, becoming property of the engineer's son. This gentleman, S.R. Winegard, started his railroad career as a hostler on the CW (running & servicing these Baldwins) and retired as an NS Road Foreman of Engines. S.R. was also a founding member of the Chapter. He visited the 662 yesterday and inspected our work. He pointed out a couple of minor details that we need to change on the trim painting, otherwise everything looked OK to him. If S.R. says it's right, we're satisfied with our work. He was there when it was in service.

Gary,

I believe you. I'm guessing that between a possible shift on the slide and the way some monitors show color differently I would have sworn it was green.

Oh by the way, excellent work on what you have done on that poor old girl.

Is 662 owned by the VMT or by the NRHS Chapter?

662 is VMT's property. We own the 663.

So, is the work on 662 in exchange for the title to 663? Does 663 get the same treatment next?

Heck of a job you guys have done. It was impossible to imagine 662 looking that good after seeing how it looked in the scrap yard.

It's certainly more blue on the newer photos and that includes the toolbox so the old photo was just a little off, perhaps from fading, the scan, or even in the original photography for some reason. If you put it in Photoshop and run Color Picker over it while looking at the "Show Colors" display you can see that in many areas the green level exceeds the blue.

But blue the engine really is.

Chris, We're planning on stabilizing 663 later in the year, and that is it for now. For some "odd reason" we're a little tired of working on Baldwin diesels after this. We've got running repairs on our operational equipment, an operational coach restoration, a caboose that is already in progress, a certain Baldwin steam locomotive (cosmetic only unless we hit the lottery) and possibly a wooden boxcar before we begin to think about restoring 663.

It also looks green to me in the old picture of it. But Geez, round of applause to your crew for doing such tremendous work in so little time. It certainly looks amazing. Looks fresh out of the factory! Congrats on a great job guys.

Scroll down in the Facebook album for photos from today, including "before & after" shots with 663. Check out the last two photos, today and 1958. I think we nailed it pretty well. Final touch up is tomorrow, she is scheduled to move to VMT on Friday.
