Thanks! I completely missed them. Those cars are also listed on page 14 in the number series charts, shown as being built in 1937. It also lends some credence to the possibility that Pressed Steel Car took over the Ryan Car plant (and maybe the company itself) there in Hegewisch, Illinois as the builder is shown in that particular chart as both Ryan and Pr. Steel.

John T. -

Thanks. It has been stated that Ryan Car was PRIMARILY a railcar repair facility, and your info confirms that. But they obviously DID build some new railroad equipment. The info about the 200 new stock cars for Western Live Stock Express is interesting, but I wonder if that company might have actually been owned by a railroad. Anyone have any information on that company?

The fact that they actually built a passenger motor car for the Milwaukee Road is something I had never heard about before. A photo or other info on the car, would be nice.

Les, I saw a patent for the machine John mentioned, and a mention in Railway Age, but can't find either of those right now. As I recall it looked like a regular doodlebug type car but it had two four axle trucks and some sort of reciprocating steam engine. International Harvester shared the patent.

There is a picture of a car on page 31 of Keilty's book, Interurbans Without Wires, which may be the Ryan car. See the text on the same page for more information.

This old thread being revisited due to a little additional info. In the new April 2019 e-mail newsletter "Rock Island Reporter" was information of some Ryan Car Company 46' long flat cars that had been built for the Rock Island in the series 93250-93749, a total of 500 cars. During 1941 and 1942, the Rock rebuilt some of these cars to a length of 53' 6" and put them in the series 90500-90798. Since there were 299 cars rebuilt, some of the original 46' long cars may have remained on the roster at that time. Not likely that any of these flat cars were preserved, but it at least tells us of other Ryan built cars.

The latest (August 2019) edition of the e-mail newsletter "Rock Island Reporter" has some information about a new HO gauge car kit based on a series of stock cars built by Ryan Car in 1930. These cars were numbered Rock Island 75000-75249. Half of the cars were still on the Rock's roster as late as 1966, but all were gone by 1973. Again, not likely that any of these Ryan-built CRI&P stock cars still exist.
