Reported that an ex Bay Colony 44 ton already cut and an ex P&W /IAIS M420 is next. (There is a set of GE B trucks). Likely more will follow like the two ex B&LE F7's?

Excuse me for being ignorant or uninformed, but--SRNJ?

Say what?

Sad to see another set of F7's biting the dust. Wasn't there a RS-3m there too, still in faded Conrail paint? I haven't heard anything on that 3m in years and last I heard it was stored in southern NJ.

RS3M is long gone years ago - sold to some place in Canada I think.
F's didn't bite the dust yet - but they are locomotives which have been used in a couple years.
Mechanically not too bad condition when they were parked.

Here are some recent photos of SRNJ 727 and 728.

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=34577

These units are notable for their assignment to the Western Allegheny branch where they were noted as being the last F-units working for their original owner in revenue service in the 1990s. In their striking as-delivered paint scheme they were frequently leased to the B&O and PRR.

Have these units been advertised as being "available" anywhere? Has any group tried to raise funds to preserve them?

I think they would fit in well with a shortline that has a successful passenger business but might need additional power to handle a growing freight business.

Here is a discussion of CNJ 1548. This was its original CNJ number - In Canada it was numbered "CNJ1548" !

http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10460&p=48743&hilit=1548#p48743

The unit had quite a bit of work done by its owner (Ed Rhone, if I recall) to return it to its Alco appearance while retaining its EMD Prime Mover.

This locomotive was scrapped in Canada in 2008.

What wrong with the M420? Parts unit?

If memory serves me, all three or at least two of the three 44 tonners are on friction bearings. They look good and until recently were secured and clean (less grafitti). But the taggers have gotten to them recently.

Later!

Friction bearings are not a problem on a 44 ton as they have to go by truck or flat car anyway All of them came to the SRNJ by truck.

Not so re: friction bearings. The late 412 came from Ball in Cinniminson on it's own wheels, although all three came from out of state by truck.

Anyone know where 412 is? Still at Mannington in Salem? Just curious-

Local moves are a possible exception if you have the right "connections". No major railroad in the US today will move a 44ton any significant distance on its own wheels. They move by truck as you said.

The General Electric owners' manual limits their 44 Ton locos to 35 m.p.h. unless the motor pinion gears are removed. Some railroads require an expensive special train if the speed limit is too low. When Tyburn RR had ConRail move No. 400 from Lancaster to Fairless in the early 1990s, Conrail's limit was 30 m.p.h., so we escaped the extra charge.

OK. Let me clarify my statement. They tried to dispose of these before with no takers because they had friction bearings. It had nothing to do with how they could be moved.

Are they getting rid of all the 44 tonners?
