This is a movie I only found out about recently, by picking up a tape of it--"Train to Tombstone:"

http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/93806/Tr ... Tombstone/

Now, I've got to tell you this is a pretty low-budget film. Some of the process shots (i.e., rear projection scenes of Indians chasing the train on horseback that are visible through the windows) are so badly out of perspective as to recall similar deliberate sequences from the film "Airplane!" I think one Indian gets shot off his horse about three times.

Despite that, the film was, in my opinion anyway, still fun, and part of it was that it was shot on the Virginia & Truckee in 1949 or 1950. Equipment in the film includes a steel mail car (No. 23? It's the car from the Yosemite Valley, which is still around) and a wooden combine standing in for a coach (I think it was No. 18?). Most interesting is the locomotive--V&T's second No. 5, a large Alco 2-8-0 from the 1920s, purchased second hand from a copper hauling road.

A comic element in No. 5's "dressing" for a Western film is the usual fake woodburning stack. In this case, it not only adds what must be at least five feet to the height of No. 5, it's so poorly built and installed that smoke apparently comes from seams and joints in it!

In any event, this is the only footage I've ever seen of the second No. 5. Unfortunately, for some reason there is nothing of this movie on YouTube that I can find.

Well, we have another one--1953's "Terminal Station," released in the United States as "Indiscretion of an American Wife." Not a favorite of mine, although my wife liked it--it's a chick flick! Bah! Story is essentially a woman (played by Jennifer Jones) breaking up with her Italian lover (Montgomery Clift! He's as Italian as I am!) in what is close to real time.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminal_Station_(film)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046366/

The film's point of interest here is that it was filmed entirely (or nearly so) in the Roma Termini (Rome Terminal Station), which was opened in 1950 and would have been quite new at the time of filming. Italian steam and electric power show up in various places, and a streetcar arrives in front of the station in the title sequence.

Looks like the streetcar line is still there, or else has been rebuilt. Also of note are the two styles of architecture--the older train shed section, started in the 1930s but never quite completed because of WW II, and the newer station itself, opened in 1950:

It's difficult to get an idea of the size of this station from street views. It is not small:

I just happened across a new one "Railroad Tigers" from China, in which Kung Fu railway employees and the Eighth Route Army battle Japanese occupiers in Manchuria, It's a bit of a strange movie to western eyes, with lots of comedic, and graphic novel elements. It's available on Netflix (at least in my region). Fans of the wonderful SY class locomotives will enjoy this one! Some elements a bit reminiscent of "The Train" and "The General". Here is the trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzyE4m1BDkI

Got me looking this one up with the apparently indestructible Jackie Chan, and it looks like a lot of digital work went into it.

Of course, if you're making a move with Jackie Chan, a lot is still done live:

Bad Day at Black Rock

While the movie is not about trains there are some great shots of a Southern Pacific Black Widow F7 A+B leading a Daylight consist at the beginning and end of this 1955 film staring Spencer Tracey

I'd like to know why the Norwegian State Railways were dragging snow onto the track? Perhaps so that the rotary could throw it further away. It seems counterproductive.

I wondered that too, but I think you missed the following scene where they were pulling a wedge shaped sled after the dozer. The dozer gathered the snow in from the banks, then the sled threw it well clear. Seems backwards, but must have worked for them.

Although, I'll have to admit, I was waiting to see some HEAVY snowfall :-)

EDIT:

Had time to watch the film again. Check out the scene starting at 7:25.

The German film 'Durchbruch Lok 234' is available on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iqq1bMMiAeg It is the true story of an East German engine driver who escapes to the West with his family by crashing his train through the Wall.
A kind of quirky British comedy is 'The Love Match' starring Arthur Askey as a soccer mad engine driver. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ckpk-OLwm0k
Enjoy!
Ray.

Not foreign, but unusual to see--an episode from "Highway Patrol" that features an attempted train robbery and a surprising amount of late 1950s SP footage, and it doesn't seem to be stock, either.

We have another episode from the syndicated series "State Trooper," in two parts. Now I have to tell you, there are no trains in episode. Rather, the emphasis is not what is in it, but who is in it. A hint--two newspaper guys in Virginia City who would be very familiar to some of us:

Add in the Oscar winning Shanghai Express with Marlene Dietrich. Cars were painted with a gaudy "Chinese" lettering scheme but the locos were really nice. It had an interesting street running scene too.

Can't believe I haven't seen listed:

The Train (Burt Lancaster). Filmed in France. Best wreck scene ever. About the French resistance trying to halt the Germans stealing French art. Best to watch on the DVD with the director's comments. Beside the wreck, the sequence of pouring rod bearing in the shop is priceless. Also noteworthy is the scene of uncoupling European couplers while the train is moving--by an actor who shouldn't have been doing it.

This is the uncoupling scene--and second wreck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1IEtzj23ws
A bombing raid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5wsjMSXolU The railroad was being abandoned and they were going to dismantle the yard. The director asked if they could blow it up for them. They said oui.
Spitfire attack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3yR0aNriPM
This is a trailer, but at the very end it has the really cool wreck scene. My recollection is that the director said the wreck destroyed all but one of the cameras they had set up to shoot the wreck. And, as you can tell, the train came within inches of destroying that one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1r4-w_QJFM
Here is a "behind the scenes" clip, showing them digging the surviving camera out from under the wreck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mz4fmT8kKN4

Union Pacific (Cecil B. DeMille--1939). DeMille's version of building the transcontinental railroad. Filmed in Utah--and in the process saved most of the Virginia & Truckee equipment that still exists. Starred Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea "and a cast of thousands".

And The Iron Horse (John Ford--1924). A silent. The first filmed version of the transcontinental railroad. Not a great story line, but it was filmed north of Wadsworth, Nevada (on the Modoc line) in the middle of winter, and one really feels the cold an dirt. Its on Youtube complete: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLxKxD3USrg
