"The Journey of Natty Gann" from Disney set in the 1930's Depression America has some steam train scenes and hobos jumping them.

A little known film released in 1958 - "The Littlest Hobo" about a hobo dog (German Shepherd) and his exploits has a chase scene that goes through an enormous street car junkyard with the street cars stacked 3 high. It's been years since I've seen it but I'm guessing it may have been filmed in Los Angeles. The image of that vast collection of street cars waiting to be destroyed is a rather sad one.
I can't find any youtube clips from the movie.

For scenes of the National Metals scrapyard, there's "Hell Bound" from 1957:

BTW, does anybody know anything about a British tv series called "The Flockton Flyer"? It sounds interesting:

Found an episode on Youtube. Who needs U-Haul?

Thank you for that link. Never knew about that movie but I'm sure that is the same junkyard where the "Littlest Hobo" shot its scene.

This turned up as an associated or linked clip with "The Flockton Flyer"--an episode from "God's Wonderful Railway:"

Routine Pleasures http://www.criterion.com/films/27947-routine-pleasures

Made in the US, but by a French director, this documentary is more or less about a Southern California model railroad club, a painter, and filmaking. It appears to have been shot in the early 1980s, but it came out in 1986. It is essentially an art film documentary about American model railroaders. It is respectful and humorous, although some of the more delicate flowers around here might take offense at the painted depictions of nudity or references to Marxism.

It is available on Hulu Plus. http://www.hulu.com/watch/348238

Was looking at the Hulu site, and "Closely Watched Trains" is there, too.

This was on YouTube for a while and then disappeared, and now it's back again--"Other Men's Women," a sort of soap opera with characters in jealousy and adultery (pre-Hayes code), William Wellman director, very early James Cagney and Joan Blondell supporting performances, Southern Pacific action (I think), and at least two wrecks, one staged full size:

Also directed by William Wellman and predating the Hayes code is "Wild Boys of the Road," about young hobos in 1933. Full movie not available, but this trailer is:

Here's another one--"Rheingold" (1977), much of it filmed on the train of that name, which at that time consisted of equipment from 1962, including a German version of a dome car. The plot doesn't look like much to me, but that could just be me. Others have commented that they liked the movie, and thought it a great advertisement for the train and the scenery along the route:

Video clips, featuring the railroad footage:

A clip from inside, subtitles are available from the "closed caption" symbol below the image:

Info on the train itself:

At least one equipment set from this train has been preserved for historic charter service:

Well, the thread expresses an interest in railroad themed films, but doesn't suggest anything about quality. Anyway, here's one from India--"The Burning Train." Move over Irin Allen, "Bollywood" does corny disaster flicks, too--and adds lots of romance, drama and big musical numbers to boot! That's Indian cinema for you--which actually has a long history, and has produced its own classics over the years.

I'll also bet Boilerwash will add this to one of his filmed train wreck collections! :-D

Don't know if this should qualify--a Russian disaster film, "Metro" ("Metpo"), 2012; Moscow subway system has a tunnel collapse under a river crossing, and people have a time getting out.

Trailers:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v65sgI9BLM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKh17zFt8-E

Full movie, but for some reason the captions don't work, I couldn't get subtitles:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tn3ebaycLSo

Other articles and pieces on the film, parts of which were actually shot on the subway line of Samara:

http://variety.com/2013/film/box-office ... ot-819487/

http://englishrussia.com/2011/09/07/cat ... cow-metro/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2649128/reviews?ref_=tt_urv

http://www.arabnews.com/offbeat/undergr ... ssian-film

One of the things that stands out in the stories on this film is the low budget--only $13 million! By our standards, that's dirt cheap, and the movie doesn't look it at all.

Now, how do we get to making something like "One Way To Eldorado" or a new version of "Titfield Thunderbolt" (dedicated employees and tourists save the Durango & Silverton/Cumbres & Toltec)?
