If you're referring to the abandoned railroad equipment, I'd say, as it is mentioned in the article, very thorough. |

Would someone kindly refresh our collective memories and tell us exactly what rail equipment is still "involved"? I know they got the former WM FA 302 out of there and down to Belington, but as of March Amtrak RS3 126 and the NYC T3a electric 278 were supposedly still there..... |

The article mentions an ex-NYC baggage and an abandoned switcher locomotive, which I'm assuming is ex-LIRR ALCO S1 #407, with a cracked block. They mentioned at least one other piece of equipment. |

I checked it out on Google Earth, and I see three older passenger cars of some type, a refrigerator car, a caboose, two RS class locos, what appears to be an S class loco, and a modern passenger car. On a siding on the other side of the highway bridge is a cluster of trees grown up around what used to be where the ex-LIRR switcher sat. If the Google earth image is fair testament to the reality of the situation, scrapping seems a long overdue fate. People have been all over these railroad cars and locos. |

There are two different locations where old railroad equipment is stored in the Albany NY area..the area being discussed in this thread is Colonie yard, North of downtown Albany..the New York Central electrics are *not* stored there..they are in "Glenmont" just south of downtown Albany..I believe this is the current list: Glenmont, south side of Albany: NYC 6000 - Alco/GE S1 electric NYC 278 - Alco/GE T3a electric NYC 8254 - Alco RS3 (Amtrak 126) NYC 2510 - GE U25B There has been some rumblings lately that some of these units might be saved! but the status is still unclear at the moment. The locomotives and rolling stock at Colonie, that will likely be impacted by the "CP cleanup" being discussed in this thread, are: Colonie yard, north side of Albany: Alco RS3 - ex B&M, nee D&H 4082 (1st 4082) Alco RS3 - Ex Albany Port RR #2 nee D&H 4126. Alco S2 - Ex Albany Port RR nee D&H 3011. Alco S1 - Ex LIRR 417. a wood caboose, probably D&H, a wood boxcar, and a few passenger cars. The WM Alco FA was part of this group, but she escaped a few years ago, and is now being restored in West Virginia. The "abandoned train" at Colonie is a popular topic for "urban decay" photographers. Here's a Flickr photo set from March of this year-- other photos can be found by Google searching for "Watervliet abandoned train" or "colonie abandoned train" http://www.flickr.com/photos/hbowmanpho ... 965345183/ The modern stainless car is an ex-NYC sleeper in full NYC ID-- I sure hope it wasn't lovingly restored 25-30 years ago and then left to this sad fate! The lower fluted panels are gone- probably taken by scrap thieves- so no car name is visible. |

That WAS an NYC "Stream" series car -- name escapes me at the moment. She sure has fallen a long way since I saw her last. It's sad, but it is a nice study in the Budd truss on a post war car. ETA |

Gary- This poses and interesting question. Here is an example of a string of equipment that is truly abandoned. Does a legitimate salvaging operation have the right to swing in and saved the goodies? My guess would be, clear it with the local CPR officials, sign a waiver, and go to work. Kind of sad to see another B&M unit go into oblivion. |

If so then I am sure there would be at least a few of us available to pull usable parts for interested organizations. I know if this is an option I'd volunteer to head up there on behalf of others. I am more saddened by the loss of the D&H passenger stock since it is much rarer than any of those Alcos regardless of home road those locos might be from. Other than a few tourist operations and Steamtown, eastern passenger equipment hasn't fared particularly well in preservation with the exception of the ubiquitous DL&W and CNJ commuter cars scattered about the US. Even those other road cars "saved" haven't faired particularly well. Probably the only exception is the predominantly B&M fleet at Strasburg. Kevin |

Pictures I found of the interior of the ex-NYC "Stream" sleeper suggest that it may have been converted to a lounge/bar car much like #4423 'Mountain Stream' that is at the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum. This would have been done by NYC in the mid- '60s for commuter service. If that's the case then maybe it's not such a big loss. |

Danbury Railway Museum was supposed to be getting them but I heard they are having trouble getting all of the arrangements together in order to remove the equipment off the site and down to thier yard. I hope they are able to get these pieces before they are gone. |

The NYC electrics are at a power plant yard near Albany and not at Colonie. I assume this puts them out of harm's way for the current clean-up at Colonie? Wesley |
