I'd love to see 2716 return in her C&O Livery. We need a C&O steam loco to be restored, one thats still in C&O Livery.

Did/does C&O 2716 have a booster? There appears to be exhaust from the trailing truck.

She does. In a couple of videos on You Tube the booster can be clearly heard while the main drivers are slipping.

''SOUTHERN'' 2716 was a favorite of mine.
Too bad her career was sidelined.

How long it's been! So, so many things gone now, or changed; love to see not only the steam engine, but the heavyweight cars in green (and it seems so few tourist roads or excursions run with those anymore, which were also the best riding cars ever built), classic lineside details like signals and whistle posts, even some jointed rail, and of course, so many of the people have passed on. . .

The 2716 seems like it must have been a nice, loud engine, including its air compressors. I bet Bill Purdie loved having this modern, high-capacity, roller-bearing, booster-equipped engine, at least until firebox issues sidelined it.

All this got me curious, and I found a video clip with some slipping, but most notably several sequences where the booster is clearly heard:

For a while, the engine did run some excursions in its C&O form. I can't find videos of it, but there are some very nice photos available, including this one:

I have a special attachment to C&O, probably because they're the ones that ran the rail line through my county before CSX tore it up in 1985 (Lexington Sub.). I wish there was a C&O 2-8-4 restored to operation. On an off-topic note... I'm working with one of my substitute teachers, on at least trying, to get a historical society going in Olive Hill, KY. Being 16, and in school; we'll have to wait and see how that goes.

The main instance of 2716 with the booster was on the Southern's Appalachia Division (the former Interstate RR mainline) between Appalachia and Norton, VA in May 1982. Basically the whole thing boiled down to a very heavy train, wet rail, no diesel assistance available, and some absolutely horrible coal. Rather ironic to get bad coal in the heart of coal country, but such was the case.

From people who were there on the train (and chasing), the coal was so bad they couldn't keep enough steam pressure. The situation went like this....build pressure, get going, pressure drops, train brakes come on, 2716 stalls, repeat. They ended up having to hand-fire the engine to supplement the stoker to make the hill.

Ron Flanary did a big article in Railfan & Railroad at the time, and there is both video and audio that was commercially released from the trips. Main Line Motion Pictures released a full video at the time covering the entire weekend, and I believe Menkel Sounds released an audio cassette. It was simply a case of being at the right place at the right time.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the 2716 firebox cracks that developed by mid-July could be traced back to the Appalachia runs. With the bad coal, the 2716 was pushed to its limit and beyond on those runs.

It's hard to find, but the Fort Wayne RR Historical Society put together a 30 minute video of the 2716 operations in 1996, including the break-in runs (with freight) and excursions. Doubt it was ever issued on dvd however.
