Some more Whitcomb adds from WW II Baldwin Magazines.

Well thank you very much. I've also been busy writing a guest column for our local newspaper plus I have a request by the local museum for a book on the Whitcomb history by next Spring so I am busy.

How have you been?

Steve

Steve -

Glad you are doing well! As a welcome back, thought I'd try to send you a little something that I found on YouTube:

I have a strange brain. Someone says something, or I think of something, and something else pops into my head. In this case, that little bugger made me think of Jack Benny and Mel Blanc, who, among other things, was the sound effect for Jack Benny's car:

Only on radio could you get away with such an iimage!

Chugging along. Could use more money, but so can everyone else around here!

Just an update on the WW II Whitcomb. Rochelle is in the running for the locomotive. I have talked to the city manager and he is interested in getting the unit. Nothing will happen until after the holidays.

Also, the same company also has retired an EMD SW1 located in Thorton, Illinois and it will probably be up for adoption. If anyone needs photos I can send them.

In the first quarter of 1944, Baldwin changed magazines and consolidated two into one.

Just for laughs:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Locomotive-Seri ... 338737f458

At $25,000 these people will never sell this Whitcomb. Get real.

Well, it is also on "Make Offer", which means you can let the auction run down in about a month and make a offer of say....double scrap value.

Bigger question is gauge of unit, prime mover type and condition, and that host of other practical and annoying details (for the seller) to answer and explain to convince somebody to purchase it in the first place.

I would guess with a name like "greenboxrecycling that the engine already is held by a scrapper. $25K for a pig in the poke though....... yeah, dreamy.

A lurker here on this page who ferociously hides for privacy's sake forwarded me this link:

I don't think this has been up here before, has it?

I haven't put it up here though I am quite familiar with it.

The website is by Chuck Roberts whom I am friends with and helped him with the Whitcomb addition to his website. He lives just west of Rochelle and owns a very nice private WW II museum. I do Whitcomb WW II displays at his place a couple times a year.

The power of the internet !

Extremely rare photograph. Whitcomb 65-ton locomotives at the Az-Zib depot, south of the then-Palestin-Lebanon border and the handing-over point between civilian (Palestine Railways) and military (British War Department) operations on the newly-built Haifa-Beirut-Tripoli line.

This rare photograph came from the manager of the Israel Railway Museum. He found my posts about Whitcomb history in another forum and sent it to me. Says he has more.

Very excited to have found a contact in the Middle East !

Photo was taken by D.S. Currie at a dock alongside the Suez Canal with the S.S. Clan Chisholm as a backdrop. WD 71233 (nee 1233) and a classmate are probably due to be loaded on the ship on their way to Italy.

A 1944 view in Beirut, where a Whitcomb 65-Tonner is juxtaposed with the diminutive looking British (War Department) 25 Ton brake van, based on a Southern Railway design. Photo by K.R.M Cameron.

Both from the manager of the Israel Railway Museum.

Paul Cotterell from an unknown source, showing three Whitcombs, probably in storage or under repair, at the Ez-Zib running shed (engine house), probably c. 1944.

Update on the Whitcomb 65-DE-19a in Mason City, Iowa. Our Community Development Director contacted the company and talked to them about the locomotive. I notified another person who made the Rochelle Railroad Park happen and arranged the move of the other Whitcombs to the park and now he is getting involved.

Hoping to get an offer put together.

Steve
