Just an update on the WW II Whitcomb. Rochelle is in the running for the locomotive. I have talked to the city manager and he is interested in getting the unit. Nothing will happen until after the holidays. Also, the same company also has retired an EMD SW1 located in Thorton, Illinois and it will probably be up for adoption. If anyone needs photos I can send them. Steve |

Well, it is also on "Make Offer", which means you can let the auction run down in about a month and make a offer of say....double scrap value. Bigger question is gauge of unit, prime mover type and condition, and that host of other practical and annoying details (for the seller) to answer and explain to convince somebody to purchase it in the first place. I would guess with a name like "greenboxrecycling that the engine already is held by a scrapper. $25K for a pig in the poke though....... yeah, dreamy. Michael Seitz Missoula MT |

The website is by Chuck Roberts whom I am friends with and helped him with the Whitcomb addition to his website. He lives just west of Rochelle and owns a very nice private WW II museum.  The power of the internet ! Extremely rare photograph. Whitcomb 65-ton locomotives at the Az-Zib depot, south of the then-Palestin-Lebanon border and the handing-over point between civilian (Palestine Railways) and military (British War Department) operations on the newly-built Haifa-Beirut-Tripoli line. This rare photograph came from the manager of the Israel Railway Museum. He found my posts about Whitcomb history in another forum and sent it to me. Says he has more.  746th Railway Operating Battalion, Germany c. 1945  Paul Cotterell from an unknown source, showing three Whitcombs, probably in storage or under repair, at the Ez-Zib running shed (engine house), probably c. 1944. Update on the Whitcomb 65-DE-19a in Mason City, Iowa. Our Community Development Director contacted the company and talked to them about the locomotive. I notified another person who made the Rochelle Railroad Park happen and arranged the move of the other Whitcombs to the park and now he is getting involved. Hoping to get an offer put together.
